Chevron's Nigerian Blocks Sale A Move In The Right Direction

Chevron recently announced plans to divest its 40% interest in Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 86 and 88 located in Niger Delta Basin, offshore Nigeria. The company completed the sale of a similar interest in two Nigerian shallow water offshore oil blocks, OML 83 and 85, to local firm First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P) in February of this year. Chevron did not reveal the amount it is expecting out of these divestments, but we believe that it is a move in the right direction for the following reasons.

  • Operating conditions are not very favorable for international oil and gas companies in Nigeria. Incidents such as theft of crude oil by organized gangs and pipeline attacks by vandals are common. In addition, there is a lot of uncertainty for upstream oil companies in the country because of the tax regime, which could change under the proposed oil bill. Chevron is therefore not alone in acting to reduce its exposure in Nigeria. Its peers like Shell, Total, ENI, and ConocoPhillips have signed similar deals over the last couple of years.
  • The move also falls in line with Chevron's current divestment plan that is now targeting cumulative asset sales worth $15 billion by 2017, up from $10 billion last year. In 2014, the company generated proceeds of around $6 billion from asset sales, which leaves scope for another $9 billion worth of deals to be executed over the next couple of years. Chevron also plans to slowly reduce its gross annual capital expenditures from around $40 billion last year to $30 billion by 2017. This, coupled with increased asset sales, should help the company reduce its net capital expenditures, thereby enhancing its free cash flows amid depressed commodity prices.
  • Oil and gas companies have seen their cash flows dry up significantly because of the precipitous decline in global crude oil prices over the past 12 months. For instance, Chevron reported first-quarter cash flows from operations of just around $2.3 billion, barely exceeding the dividend payout of $2 billion. This situation has led oil companies to claw back on capital spending and increase their divestment program in order to reinforce their free cash flows to cover shareholder distributions. Therefore, we believe that the sale of Nigerian assets will not only reduce Chevron's operating risk but also help boost its free cash flows to cover the dividend program in the short to medium term.

    Behind-the-Curtain Changes at A News Cafe.com

Today I talk with Joseph Domke of Ostrava, Czech Republic, where he's lived for nine years with his delightful wife Marie and my three Ragdoll grandcats, Neffie, Apollo and the new cat, whose name I always forget.

Joe's my son – the youngest – but he's also A News Cafe.com's webmaster; the guy who came up with the idea – and who created a "simple blog" for me after my abrupt "departure" from my newspaper job in 2007. My decade-old newspaper job ended on a Wednesday, and by that Sunday Joe had sent me a link to my new way to remain a journalist: online. Joe's been with the site ever since.

Anyway, although Joe and I are on the other side of the world from one another, he and I Skype frequently to manage the site, and catch up on life; so often that it doesn't feel as if he's that far away. And besides, he's so happy there. And like most mothers, if my kid's happy, I'm happy.

Speaking of happy, I am sure he will tell you that one of the greatest joys of his life is to work with his mother — except when I pester him to write a food column … just a few words, a couple of pictures, a little recipe … which I try not to do more than about three or four times a year. Or seven.

But in the meantime, today he will talk about the changes you might have noticed here on your favorite online news magazine site since he flipped the switch – or whatever – early Saturday morning.

    joe cropped

Q: Hi, Joe. I know your preference is to remain behind the curtain, so I appreciate you allowing me to drag you to center stage to explain the ways in which A News Cafe.com has changed lately.

Right away I can tell you that I'm extremely excited about having a recipe tab on the nav bar, and I like the little conversation bubbles at the top of each post that will show the number of comments. Very cool.

I'm glad you like the site so far and I'm relieved that the upgrade went without a hitch.

Q: Likewise. OK, first, what exactly happened Saturday?

We use a content management system called WordPress on anewscafe.com and Saturday morning I updated it to the newest version.

Q: Technically speaking  – well, it's all technical – but we changed "themes" –  right? Why?

Right. Because our old theme wasn't compatible with the newest version of WordPress, I had to install a new theme as well. Since I wanted to keep the same look of the old theme I had to customize an existing theme that was compatible with the newest WordPress.

    Q: Will this improve A News Cafe.com?

    Definitely.

Q: Can you list some examples of how?

The improvements are mostly to the backend of the site that we use for publishing articles. It has a better interface and is faster and more secure.

Q: I'll take your word for it. Now, how will the change affect readers' experience with A News Cafe.com, or will it?

Readers will find that the site looks much better on mobile devices and tablets. The old site had a very basic mobile theme that looked nothing like the desktop version. The new theme is what's called mobile responsive, which means that the layout changes dynamically depending on the size of the screen that you're viewing it on.

So when viewing the site on a tablet-sized screen the right sidebar – that contains Photo Cafe, ads and other things – is collapsed to make room for the articles. You can pop it back up by pressing the "<<" icon on the right, below the navigation bar.

When viewing on a smart phone-sized screen the right sidebar is moved to the bottom of the page, the articles are moved into a single column and the navigation menu bar is collapsed as well. You can expand the navigation menu by pressing the icon with the three horizontal lines on the right, below the anewscafe.com logo.

Q: All righty. Sounds good. And advertisers? What will this change mean for them?

One of the main reasons that I wanted to upgrade the site was I wanted to install a new advertising management system that couldn't be installed on the old version of WordPress that we were using.

The new ad system has better click and view tracking with interactive graphs and better support for flash-based ads. I think advertisers will like being able to see all the stats change on a day-to-day basis. The old ad system just kept an ongoing record, so you couldn't look back at see the stats for a specific time period.

Q: That makes me happy, because it should make advertisers happy. How long has this been in the works?

I've been working on it for about a month. Most of that time was spent customizing the new theme and getting things to work properly… and worrying that I'd break the site while performing the upgrade.

Q: I never doubted you, but I'm glad you didn't break the site. On another note, is it my imagination or does the site – I don't know – pop more?

The design is a little cleaned up. Since I was starting with a clean slate I was able to make sure that things like layout, element spacing and font colors were consistent throughout the site.

Q: Have you moved all the furniture back in place after the new installation – if that's the correct word – or are some things still in transition as we move to the new theme? Will there be glitches?

I'm still working on some things. Mostly small layout and design bugs whenever I find them. But there shouldn't be any major glitches now.

Q: That's a relief. Back to this whole process, we give a heartfelt, enthusiastic shout-out to Jim Gore (thank you, Jim!), the retired programmer/genius/friend who's been with A News Cafe.com since its inception, who was so gracious to lend a hand with this project, right?

Jim's my hero! I really couldn't have done this without him. He found solutions to some big problems that I just couldn't figure out and was great at catching anything I might have forgotten.

Jim Gore (left) and Joe Domke actually got to work in the same time zone recently when Joe flew from the Czech Republic to consult with Jim about the upcoming redesign.

Jim Gore (left) and Joe Domke actually got to work in the same time zone a few years ago when Joe flew from the Czech Republic to consult with Jim about the last redesign.

Q: Is there anything else I should have asked?

How about why I wanted to upgrade the site?

Q: Why did you want to upgrade the site?

I'll be in Italy for a week in July and I realized it would be hard for me to put up and take down ads,  so I wanted a new ad system that has scheduling built-in. That's when I discovered our old theme didn't work with the new version of WordPress (after seven stressful hours of site downtime and frustrating IM chats with our webhost's tech support when a backup restore went wrong) and I'd have to make an all new theme.

Q: How frustrating that must have been. I had no idea, though I do remember a few unstable moments when the site was down unexpectedly. Readers were troopers about it.

But hey, you're going to Italy! What fun! Have a cannoli for me.

Before we wrap this up, is this the part where you say how much fun it is to work with your mother?

It is very fun working with my mother. Can you pay me now, please?

Joe and his mom, Doni Chamberlain, in the Beskydy mountains for Christmas 2014.

Joe and his mom, Doni Chamberlain, in the Beskydy mountains for Christmas 2014.

    Q: You bet. Tomorrow.

Well, thank goodness we got all that business stuff out of the way. Now, for other important news, how are my grandcats, what's the weather like in Ostrava, and do you have any new recipes you'd like to share with us, as long as you're here? How about this one for the picture of your donuts I stole copied from your Facebook page?

Cats are good, weather's fine, and here's where I found the donut recipe.

    joe's donuts

Q: You can't blame me for trying.

Thanks, Joe, for indulging me with my questions, and thank you for all you do to keep A News Cafe.com running smoothly.

Readers and advertisers, on behalf of the team at A News Cafe.com we thank you for your patience during his upgrade. If you notice any glitches, or something amiss, please let us know, either in the comments section, or via email to me at donig.anewscafe@gmail.com

What Makes an Advisor Blog Great?

From the July 2015 issue of Research Magazine • Subscribe!

June 29, 2015 Blogging can give a powerful boost to a financial advisor's career—if done right

The sheer abundance of Internet blogs boggles the mind: At current count, there are more than 152 million of them. What's more, every half-second someone launches a new blog, according to WordPress, a company that creates and manages them.

You might expect celebrities like Lady Gaga, Beyonce or Arianna Huffington to work the blogosphere. And they do. What you might not expect to encounter are The White House Blog, the United Nations Blog and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Blog. They're online too. Then, of course, there are weird blogs, like the Hungover Owls Blog and the Breaded Cats Blog. (Don't ask!)

Not to miss opportunities, the financial services industry has joined the blog fest. Firms and advisors alike have taken to cyberspace to be seen and heard, educate, opine and, it is hoped, generate new business. As a result of their enormously popular blogs, several FAs and RIAs have seen their stars rise in the industry and beyond.

Famed Alvin Toffler, author of "Future Shock," argued in his 2006 book, "Revolutionary Wealth," co-written with Heidi Toffler, that, in the expansion of today's knowledge-based economy "expertise-based authority is being challenged as never before." As an example, he cites bloggers who are "challenging the authority of professional journalists."

Barry Ritholtz is one such blogger. Launching The Big Picture in 2003, "I didn't think that the financial press was doing an especially good job covering what I believed to be true and what I thought was significant or insignificant," says the chair-CIO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, in New York City. "So every now and then, I'd use my blog to push back against mainstream ideas."

The Big Picture, enhanced by photos and lively graphics, is one of the most popular blogs directed at the general public that advisors read as well. To date, it boasts 30,000 posts and snags 1.5 million page views monthly.

What has made his blog so successful, says Ritholtz, a former attorney, is publication of a new piece daily and the RIA's authentic voice as a practitioner with real-life experience versus the blogs of financial journalists.

"Just cranking out a lot of posts and making outrageous predictions isn't going to get you far for very long. There has to be some thought process and real analytic thinking," he says.

That's the stuff of Bob Seawright's blog, Above the Market, too. Though written for financial services professionals, consumers are avid readers. Seawright, familiar to Research readers as the magazine's Annuity Analytics columnist, is chief investment and information officer of Madison Avenue Securities, a BD headquartered in San Diego.

Seawright's posts—minimum 1,000 words—are considerably longer than the typical 600-word communiques of most financial bloggers. But Seawright has lots to say.

"I'm just getting warmed up at 600 words," he notes.

Tackling meaty subjects that demand in-depth attention, Seawright blogs less often than many of his colleagues. But when he does, the content is substantial and of high caliber. It might be about behavioral economics, the stock market or financial planning. "A New Kind of Investment Outlook," which he posted on Feb. 6 of this year, totaled 3,500 words.

"Sometimes I use the blog as a commitment device to solidify my thinking. If I'm struggling with how to deal with something, writing a piece about it works really well for me," says Seawright, who also practiced law before entering financial services.

    Nerd Ascent

The high-profile Nerd's Eye View blog for advisors, written by Michael Kitces, a partner in Pinnacle Advisory Group, spawned a flourishing offshoot business for the FA as an in-demand speaker.

Kitces' blog focuses on the wide world of financial services, with thorough pieces about practice management, planning issues, and insightful articles interpreting industry trends. Each weekend, he curates—passes along—a round-up of notable pieces that ran during the past week.

The secret to Kitces' success is a focus on value and, as with Ritholtz, posting articles on a continual basis. He does all his own writing, with help only with graphics and occasional technical support.

He launched his blog in 2008 but, alas, with no readers, abandoned it after only a few weeks. By 2010, Kitces had a clear focus as to his target audience and just as important, what he would use to circulate the posts: social media.

"I knew how to create content. But I never really knew how to put it out there to get an audience," Kitces says. "Watching the growth of Twitter, in particular, did it for me." He remains on Twitter—the biggest driver of traffic to the blog—along with LinkedIn, Facebook and Google Plus.

Specialized blogs, if done right, attract a huge following. A prime example is Bill Winterberg's FPPad blog about technology for financial advisors, started in 2008. With practical information, he zeroes in on tech that enables FAs to be more efficient and serve up a more satisfying client experience.

"Advisors already have so much competition for their time. I don't want to add to the noise; I want to be part of the signal and provide practical takeaways that have specific business applications," says Winterberg, who formerly wrote software for Hewlett Packard and LeapFrog Toys. This past May, he was gearing up to expand the blog by hiring staff writers to cover specific tech areas.

Only a few years ago, it was a major challenge to launch a blog (short for weblog). Today, with the advent of services such as WordPress and TypePad, it's easy.

"There's an explosion in blogs for consumers as well as for advisors," says Winterberg, based in Atlanta. "Now the challenge is for advisors to separate the wheat from the chaff and identify blogs that continually produce good information and practical resources versus those that are soapboxes or maybe gossip posts."

One of the leading advisor blogs, read by consumers too, is Wade Pfau's Retirement Researcher. He started it in 2010 when, as an economics professor in Tokyo, he was seeking an academic post in financial planning in the U.S.

The Iowa native now has two jobs here: professor of retirement income at the American College of Financial Services and director of retirement research at McLean Asset Management, in McLean, Virginia.

Pfau's blogging forte is explaining complex technical retirement research in easy-to-understand prose. He discusses his own research and also summarizes others' findings published in journals. Retirement income has become a big issue of late, and Pfau's blog is one of the few places that delve deeply into the subject.

Advisors flirting with the idea of starting a blog would be wise to heed Pfau's advice. He says: "Blogging can be a good tool to find new clients, but it should be in your own voice and interesting. You've got to maintain it continually, update it and promote it through Twitter and other social media."

    Blog Strategies

Visuals—ranging from graphics to videos—can give a blog magnetic appeal. On the Meb Faber Research blog, charts play a featured role. And at each week's end, Faber writes a summary of best tweets—his and others'—accompanied by a number of elucidating charts.

Faber began his blog in 2006; now 1,500 articles populate it. An engineer by trade, the quant looks at blogging as "a venue for two things: a soapbox to share your views with the world and to get feedback from many people."

Blogging is just one piece of Faber's social media pie. According to Faber, a combination of the blog plus academic papers and Twitter has "driven the majority" of his firm's assets, which now total nearly $500 million under management.

Most wirehouse and regional BDs have introduced corporate blogs. Some firms, like Raymond James, also have one blog for advisors and another for clients. "Practice Insights," for RJ FAs, concentrates on such critical areas as practice management, marketing support, and succession planning. Previously, this information was summarized and emailed to advisors. In January of this year the firm switched to a blog format.

It is divided into easy-to-spot categories, with concise pieces about, for instance, "The Five Stages of Client Engagement." Drilling down yields more articles on allied topics.

Though "Practice Insights" is written for RJ advisors, it also doubles as a recruiting tool.

"Our conscious decision was to make this information available publicly with the [notion] that if advisors at other firms see it, they could infer the kind of practice management support we have. Certainly one of the reasons was that, if advisors at other firms read it, they might develop an affinity for Raymond James. [Indeed], many times advisors from other firms will reach out and say they'd like more information," says Mike White, chief marketing officer.

Other popular blogs for advisors include Abnormal Returns, which does an excellent job of compiling content from other blogs; Scholarfp by fiduciary standard advocate Ron Rhoades, who is with Western Kentucky University; Seicblogs.com, highlighting experts' practical tips; Charles Sizemore.com, focusing on smart investing and global trends; and VanguardAdvisorsblog.com, wherein the firm's experts write about a variety of critical topics.

Advisors should also pay attention to these winning blogs aimed at consumers: Good Financial Cents—easy to navigate and with lots of good visuals and personal finance articles like "Why You Should Never Own a Variable Annuity"; Guidevine, with pieces like "Finding the Right Financial Advisor" (Guidevine also has a blog for FAs); Low-Stress-Investing.com, by CFP Andy Millard, packed with videos of the telegenic Millard discussing personal finance; Oxygenfinancial.net's Smart Money by Ted Jenkin and Kyle Lewis, which, aimed at Gen X and the millennials, exudes personality and humor; the Reformed Broker by Joshua Brown, an FA with Ritholtz's firm, who writes funny stuff—about finance, politics and culture.

Advisors who'd like to take a crack at blogging with a view to adding new clients should keep in mind a few key points. First: "You need to know who you're looking for to attract the right type of [prospects] and subtly repel the wrong kind," says Marie Swift, president-CEO of Impact Communications, a Kansas City, Missouri-based marketing and PR firm specializing in the financial services industry.

Notes Kitces: "In the blogging world, literally any niche is better than none." Google's search engine, he adds, "favors specialized sites that are recognized as authoritative and are not generalists."

If writing isn't a strength, advisors can hire a ghost-blogger or purchase inexpensive custom blogs written to their specs from companies like Blogmutt.

Bottom line: As the top advisor blogs have proven, blogging helps FAs become discoverable and demonstrate their expertise. When a prospect seeks a particular product or service online, if an advisor has been blogging about the subject, the advisor's site will crop up.

Popular blogs project the writer's personality. "Think of the Web as a giant radio station. As a blogger, you're a DJ sharing the very best 'songs' on your network. Your favorite DJ has personality—you aren't tuning in just for the music. So don't be afraid to mix your personality into your posts," advises Amy McIllwain, vice president of social and digital strategy at Moore Communications Group in Denver, which recently acquired her firm, Financial Social Media. "Blogging builds your personal brand. Social media," she says, "is about humanizing the brand."

The best of advisor blogs do just that.

Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Digital Nomad?

The digital nomad lifestyle looks glamorous, but what is it really like? A growing number of people embrace the idea of running businesses from the road. The image of the digital nomad used to be that the solopreneur, the young man or woman working from caves and the backs of camels, often writing about his or her adventures.

These days, it's becoming a more viable and high-paying lifestyle. It even has a new name: Location Independence, which can mean anything from operating a high-income solo business, to having far-flung offices and a mobile CEO, to having a mobile CEO working with a network of employees and freelancers. And plenty of people dream of the lifestyle espoused by organizations like Dynamite Circle. The 900 members in its invitation-only circle include substantial, multi-employee companies.

It can seem ideal: you travel, your business grows faster as you widen your global network, and you benefit creatively from the constant rush of meeting new people and learning about new cultures. But what kind of person can pull this off in reality? It's like being an entrepreneur and a traveler at the same time, with freedom as the goal. Dan Norris, who runs a quasi location-independent business, WP Curve, doing WordPress support from the Gold Coast of Australia, wrote bluntly about his failures in a post on Medium. He noted that he'd failed 83% of the time.

In other words, only one of six ideas he had in his first year worked. He travels a lot, he says, but is fairly settled because he has children. He wrote about the struggles here: "After 12 months full-time and spending about $60,000, I was

    • making $476

    • spending $2,000 a month on expenses

    • shutting down 2 of 3 products

    • 1 month away from having to get a job."

Two weeks later, he launched WP Curve, which had $20,000 a month in recurring revenue last year, he said.

I asked Woodward about the essential qualities of someone who can make this kind of fast-paced entrepreneurial lifestyle work.  She says she guesses there are a few hundred thousand people living the location independent lifestyle worldwide, based on the number of people in online communities and support networks.

Be comfortable with chaos. If you are a person who needs to feel organized to function well, this is probably not for you. Woodward said this was the hardest challenge she and her husband faced: "We had to get good or comfortable with not knowing, uncertainty and change!" Even people who think they are comfortable with uncertainty may require some time to adapt. And to a certain extent, you calibrate your own uncertainty. If you want more money certainty, go for long-term contracts or take a job that enables you to work from anywhere.

Be able to manage your own productivity. "Having a high level of self awareness helps you manage the ups and downs and continue to meet your own physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, no matter where you are." How does this translate into real life? Though it seems obvious, there are many work habits, counterproductive and productive, that you have probably adopted without thinking about them. For instance, I worked on a story once about a woman who was able to become much more productive when she realized that she needed to focus on a certain kind of work — balancing the books and making income projections — early in the morning. She could put in long hours, but couldn't afford to redo mistakes on detail-oriented work, which tended to happen if she worked on it late at night. People who have never worked for themselves or have never faced the need to be highly productive in a short span of time might not have developed those kinds of insights.

Discipline. While the lifestyle looks like the embodiment of freedom, running a business remotely means working twice as hard at being disciplined. Even in a typical workspace, it's easy to put off a hard conversation with an employee who's not working out. If you've planted yourself at a beach in Thailand for a few months, the temptations to put off those harder tasks of running a company or being self-employed is even even tougher to overcome.  "There's no-one telling you what to do, where to do it, when to do it or or how to do it, so you must be able to define your own boundaries and the discipline within yourself to get done whatever needs to be done," said Woodward.

Know when you or your family needs a break. Your identity can change over the years. Many location-independent entrepreneurs, like Woodward and her husband, scale back their travels to some extent when they have children.

10 years of WordPress.com: 2.5B blog posts in 137 languages and 3B comments

Got email marketing? We've got best practices from LivingSocial and estate sale guru Everything But The House in our next Insight webinar.

As the Internet's most popular blogging platform, WordPress.com needs little introduction. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the blog-building / Web-hosting service owned and operated by Automattic. And today, in the same week founder and CEO Matt Mullenweg celebrated 10 years since the company's first hire, Automattic has revealed some interesting numbers covering a decade of WordPress.com blogging.

According to a blog post published by Automattic, in the past 10 years, a total of 137 languages have been used across 2.5 billion posts written with WordPress.com.

Feeding into those 2.5 billion posts are more than 3 billion comments, while the longest title ever to appear on a WordPress.com blog containing 19,176 words. The longest post itself consisted of a staggering 10 million words — we don't envy the copy editor on that one.

It's also worth clearing up an oft-confused tidbit surrounding the WordPress brand. Operated by the not-for-profit WordPress Foundation, "WordPress" is actually the name of the unhosted open-source blogging tool created by Mullenweg and Mike Little — you download software and associated templates to your computer, find your own host, and you're good to go.

After unleashing WordPress on the world's blogging community in 2003, Mullenweg founded Automattic — a fully private corporation — and opened WordPress.com in August 2005. WordPress.com is itself powered by the WordPress software. Today, 24 percent of all websites are either hosted on WordPress.com or use the WordPress open-source software.

You may also not know that Automattic is the company behind a ton of related blogging tools, such as spam-filtering service Akismet, avatar-hosting service Gravatar, survey and polling tool PollDaddy, and note-taking synchronization service Simplenote.

In May last year, Automattic raised its biggest-ever funding round — the $160 million deal valued the company at more than $1 billion. But as owner of the Web's most recognizable self-publishing brand, that seems like chump change.

Researcher Standards Set High for NAPBS Accredited Background Screening Firms

     NABPS-Accreditation_Medium

Written By ESR News Blog Editor Thomas Ahearn

Criminal background checks performed by public record researchers at the county court level are the backbone of employment screening. A background screening firm accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) seeks the highest standards from these researchers and ensures those standards will be met through a set of policies that deal with data products used for background checks. This blog is the fourth in a six part series about NAPBS Accreditation. For previous blogs about NAPBS Accreditation, please visit http://www.esrcheck.com/wordpress/tag/accreditation/.

Researcher and data product standards are just one part of the Background Screening Agency Accreditation Program (BSAAP) created by the NAPBS for Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs), the technical term for background screening companies. The BSAAP contains 58 clauses that CRAs must follow to be NAPBS Accredited. The clauses are divided into six sections: 1.) Data Information and Security, 2.) Legal Compliance, 3.) Client Education, 4.) Researcher and Data Product Standards, 5.) Verification Service Standards, and 6.) Miscellaneous Business Practices. This blog will focus on 'Section 4: Researcher and Data Product Standards' which contains eight clauses.

'Section 4: Researcher and Data Product Standards' examines the relationship between a CRA and the public records researchers used to gather information for background checks. Topics covered in Section 3 include public record researcher agreements, vetting and certifying researchers, Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance, auditing procedures for quality assurance, and designating qualified individuals within the CRA who are responsible for understanding court terminology used in background checks. The eight clauses in 'Section 4: Researcher and Data Product Standards' for NAPBS Accreditation are as follows:

  • 4.1 Public Record Researcher Agreement – CRA shall require a signed agreement from all non-employee public record researchers. The agreement shall clearly outline the scope of services agreed to by CRA and researcher, including jurisdictions covered, search methodology, depth of search, disclosure of findings, methodology and time frame for communication and completion of requests, methodology for confirming identity of subject of record(s), confidentiality requirements, and reinvestigation requirements.
  • 4.2 Vetting Requirement – CRA shall have procedures in place to vet or qualify new public record researchers.
  • 4.3 Public Record Researcher Certification – CRA shall require public record researcher to certify in writing that they will conduct research in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, as well as in the manner prescribed by the jurisdiction which maintains the official record of the court; never obtain information through illegal or unethical means; and utilize document disposal and/or destruction methods pursuant to the federal FCRA.
  • 4.4 Errors and Omissions Coverage – CRA shall obtain proof of public record researcher's Errors and Omissions Insurance. If public record researcher is unable to provide proof of insurance, CRA shall maintain coverage for uninsured and/or underinsured public record researcher.
  • 4.5 Information Security – CRA shall provide a secure means by which public record researcher will receive orders and return search results.
  • 4.6 Auditing Procedures – CRA shall maintain auditing procedures for quality assurance in regard to their active public record researchers.
  • 4.7 Identification Confirmation – CRA shall follow reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy when determining the identity of a consumer who is the subject of a record prior to reporting the information. CRA shall have procedures in place to notify client of any adverse information that is reported based on a name match only.
  • 4.8 Jurisdictional Knowledge – The CRA shall designate a qualified individual(s) or position(s) within the organization responsible for understanding court terminology, as well as the various jurisdictional court differences if CRA reports court records.
  • According to the 'Accreditation' page on the NAPBS website, the BSAAP has become a widely recognized seal of approval that brings national recognition to an employment background screening-affiliated organization for its commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards, and continued institutional improvement. The governing body for the accreditation program and future personnel certification is the Background Screening Credentialing Council (BSCC). For more information about NAPBS Accreditation, please visit http://www.napbs.com/accreditation/.

Founded in 2003, the NAPBS – "The Voice of Screening Professionals" – exists to promote ethical business practices, compliance with the FCRA, equal employment opportunity, and state and international consumer protection laws relating to the background screening profession. The NAPBS provides educational programs aimed at empowering members to better serve their clients, while adhering to standards of excellence in the background screening profession. For more information about the NAPBS, please visit http://www.napbs.com/.

Founded in 1997, Employment Screening Resources® (ESR) – "The Background Check Authority®" – is a nationwide background screening firm accredited by the NAPBS located in the San Francisco, California-area. ESR's SOC 2 Audit Report confirms it meets high standards set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) for protecting consumer information. 10 Tips to Secure WordPress

Keeping WordPress secure is important in order to ensure that your site isn't compromised. Uptime is maximized, your data is safe, and your site runs as quickly and reliably as possible.

    wordpress-logo-simplified-rgb

Today we'll look at 10 ways to help improve and maintain your WordPress site's security, starting with the simplest and working through to some more advanced tips to help you secure WordPress.

    User Security

A key area that attackers will attempt to access is the WordPress administration interface. If a malicious user is able to login as an admin, they'll be free to do whatever they like to your site.

Some will attempt to login using a brute force attack, by setting up a botnet (many computers which the attacker controls) to repetitively attempting to login to your site, using different username and password combinations.

Here are some changes that you can make to help secure the WordPress admin interface:

    1. Use a Unique, Secure Username and Password

Avoid using the default admin username. While you're able to choose your own username when setting up a new WordPress site, if you're on an older installation (which you should really upgrade – we'll cover that later), or you've already set your username to admin, you can use a WordPress Plugin such as Username Changer to change your username to something more secure. You can also create a new user with admin rights and remove the old 'admin' username.

Try to avoid common usernames such as administrator, your website's name or your name.

For passwords, it's important to choose a complex password comprised of letters, numbers and characters. Don't choose a password that's similar to your username, website name or a simple word with a few changes. Avoid dictionary words, and preferably use a random string of characters. A good password management tool will help you securely generate, store and use these complex passwords.

Alternatively, an easy way to remember a password, whilst maintaining sufficient complexity, is to use a phonetic password generator (such as this one).

    2. Use Two-factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (known as 2FA, or sometimes 2-step verification) requires a user to login with not just their username and password, but also a unique code that's generated for one-time-use and sent to a device (typically a smartphone) via SMS or an iOS/Android app.

We've covered how to setup 2FA in our Google Authenticator tutorial.

    3. Verify the User Is Human

reCAPTCHA forms, which ask the user to input what they see in an image as text, are a useful way to stop botnets from attempting to brute force login to your WordPress site. Botnets typically can't automate this part of the login process, therefore it helps prevent them from accessing your site.

We've covered how to implement 'No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA' as part of your WordPress login process here.

    4. Password Protecting wp-login.php

If you're a more advanced WordPress user or developer, and you're comfortable with some server-side changes, you can require a server-side login before the WordPress login screen is displayed.

This provides another layer of security, and we've covered how you can do this in our Preventing Brute Force attacks against WordPress websites article.

    Code Security

Whether you're developing your own theme or plugin for your site, or using something from a third-party, it's important that the code used is secure, and doesn't open the door to potential attacks.

Insecure code, and not following best practices, may result in attackers being able to gain control of some or all of your WordPress site.

There are a few ways we can help ensure code integrity and security:

    5. Keep WordPress Updated

Since WordPress 3.7, minor releases – which cover security and maintenance – are automatically applies. However, you can also extend this to automatically install major WordPress releases, by adding the following to your site's wp-config.php file:

    define( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', true );

Whilst this may seem like a good idea, it may result in incompatibility between the newly installed version of WordPress and your existing themes and/or plugins. It's always a good idea to maintain a testing environment for this sort of thing.

There are third party tools which can connect to your WordPress website and let you manage all of your WordPress installations from a single, unified interface. Best of all, you can perform one-click installs of WordPress, theme and plugin updates:

For further reading, we've published articles on how to keep your WordPress website up to date:

    6. Choose Your Theme and Plugins Wisely

It's important to choose themes and plugins that are actively maintained and regularly updated. Whilst this isn't a guarantee of security, it should mean that if there are security vulnerabilities found in a theme or plugin, it'll be addressed and updated quickly.

Also check the detailed descriptions of plugins, as some will be audited by third parties (such as Sucuri) for security, which can help give you peace of mind.

    7. Developing Themes and Plugins

Whether you're new to WordPress development, or have been working with WordPress for some time developing themes and/or plugins, it's important to follow key WordPress security best practices.

From sanitizing data, using nonces and adhering to WordPress Roles and Capabilities, it's important to keep up-to-date with WordPress development best practices:

    Hosting Security

With your WordPress installation more secure due to improving user authentication and the quality of our code, it's also important to ensure you have well supported, secure, hosting.

    8. Use Managed Hosting

There are several companies now offering Managed WordPress hosting, such as WP Engine, SiteGround and Media Temple. Whilst you'll typically pay a premium over more traditional shared or unmanaged hosting, a managed host will help keep your site secure.

For example, WP Engine will automatically update WordPress and key plugins, if there are known security vulnerabilities, as well as disable plugins known to cause performance and security issues. As with most managed WordPress hosts, they provide hardware based firewalls and configuration to ensure that Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks don't bring your site down.

Some users might find this approach intrusive, it does provide peace of mind and expertise to ensure your WordPress website remains functioning.

    9. Ensure File and Folder Permissions Are Correct

If you're not using a managed web host, it's important to ensure that WordPress files and folders have the correct ownership and permissions. Not only does this allow WordPress to keep itself updated, it also prevents attackers from exploiting poor file security and taking control of your site.

As a basic guide, WordPress folders should always have 0755 permissions, and WordPress files should always have 0644 permissions – although this can vary from host to host.

If you're getting errors when attempting to install plugins, or upload new media, don't be tempted to set any folder permissions to 0777. Instead, work with your web host to ensure that PHP is run with the correct user, and that the folders are owned by the same user.

If you've got shell access, you can run a few commands to ensure WordPress is secure:

    find /path/to/your/wordpress/install/ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \; find /path/to/your/wordpress/install/ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

If you know the user and group that should have ownership of the WordPress files and folders, use:

    sudo chown -R username:group /path/to/your/wordpress/install 10. Server Side Hardening

For advanced users managing their own web hosting, you can also:

  • Ensure your database user has access to SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE privileges only
  • Use strong database usernames and passwords
  • Disallow server-side file editing within WordPress, by adding define('DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true); to your wp-config.php file
  • Some web hosts will be able to perform some of these actions for you – it's always worth asking.

For more information on WordPress and server hardening, check out the WordPress Codex documentation on Hardening WordPress.

    Conclusion

In this article we've covered 10 tips for securing your WordPress website, ranging from basic user authentication through to coding practices and hosting setup. For more advanced users, we've touched on some of the advanced hardening techniques that can be used to ensure WordPress is as secure as possible.

Another option which is worth considering is the use of a security plugin such as WordFence or BulletProof Security. There are many to choose from, and they all have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's best to do some research to find one which best suits your requirements. We've covered some of the more advanced options of security plugins here.

And, it always pays to remember that while prevention is better than cure, it only takes one small mistake to result in loss of data through a hacked WordPress installation. Therefore it's vital to install a WordPress backup service, such as VaultPress and BackupBuddy, so that your website can be restored easily in case of attack or error. We cover the topic of backups, plus plenty more, in our Definitive Guide to WordPress Maintenance.

FlipBuilder Allows Publishing on WordPress with WordPress Magazine Plugin

WordPress magazine plugin tool is now provided by FlipBuilder. WP users can now enrich their content with page turning and animation effects.

Hong Kong — (ReleaseWire) — 06/23/2015 — FlipBuilder announces a new capability of its Flip PDF software, to create a WordPress magazine plugin. The plugin gives the content producer the ability to publish their flipbooks on their WordPress sites.

The Flip PDF Software is simple yet powerful. It converts static PDF documents to elegant page turning e-books. Now, with the almost magical WordPress magazine plugin, the digital magazine can be published on WordPress with minimal hassle. It produces a realistic looking experience for readers who will view the magazine as if they are reading a book. The pages are very responsive and can be easily shifted from left to right, enlarged and read at full screen.

The WordPress magazine plugin is fairly easy to implement. To create an online magazine for WordPress, the user simply selects under the "Publish" option within the software to produce a WordPress plugin after the flipbook is designed. The publisher then selects the proportions that they want the magazine to be online.

Later the user installs the WordPress magazine plugin into WordPress. To get the flipbook to be viewed online, the user then activates the WordPress magazine plugin and from the menu, copies and pastes the short-code for the flipbook into the WordPress post.

Sam Huang, Senior Software Development Engineer of FlipBuilder mentioned that, "the WordPress magazine plugin is convenient and allows WordPress users to show rich animated media for their readers. It is a cut above other similar products as the flipbook is capable of being placed anywhere on the publisher's WordPress website and can be displayed at any appropriate dimension."

Content is necessary for any website to grow and this WordPress magazine plugin will create unique digital content for publishers. The reader can interact with the flipbook by sharing it via social media and email, embedding it into other websites, printing copies and even searching within the body of the document. The flipbook is capable of having interactive elements such as audio, video and animation that can be viewed on a computer or on mobile devices.
