More than just a blogging platform, WordPress is home to entrepreneur Susanne Friedrich

Susanne Friedrich, the owner of website design company Red Princess Productions, is a German immigrant and current Bay Area resident who has been designing websites for her business for about seven years. PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY EDWIN GANO / ASSOCIATE PHOTO EDITOR

In the WordPress community, Susanne Friedrich occupies her own space.

As a 61-year-old woman and the owner of her own website design business, Red Princess Productions, Friedrich, a Bay Area resident, stands out from the crowd of predominantly young, male entrepreneurs on WordPress terrain.

Friedrich, a German native who has lived in California since 1989, said she believes she is on the older end of the WordPress community. After all, she experienced the birth of computers in the mid-90s, and then she got her first computer in her 30s or 40s. WordPress only became a part of her life six or seven years ago.

She started with photography. That got her into digital design and Photoshop, which pulled her in so much she quit her job as a nurse. She ended up designing her first website, then, years later, got her first client who requested she make a website and do it on WordPress.

She had no idea what WordPress was.

But Friedrich, determined to keep the client, said yes — she did know it. Then she sat down, learned it and never looked back.

She has produced websites for more than a decade now. She's whittled her skills after studying at Massachusetts College of Art, The Art Institute of San Francisco, San Francisco City College and The Crucible, an industrial arts institute.

"I'm interested in the beauty of a website and the functionality," she said.

She specializes in making websites with portfolios because she made her first portfolio websites for photographer friends.

Friedrich is not what you would consider a heavy-duty coder, but she understands CSS and PHP, she said, and regularly tinkers with tweaking the latter.

"The WordPress platform is intuitive, it's easy to understand," she said. "You look at the interface and it's become more and more beautiful and accessible, visually."

And for Friedrich, intuitiveness is important, particularly for users who do not code or code very little.

"I think WordPress has made it easier for people who are not coders to make a website and maybe that has attracted more women to it," she said.

It is no secret that female programmers are the minority compared to male programmers.

Of all the individuals from 157 countries who volunteered answers for Stack Overflow's 2015 developer survey, 92.1 percent identified as male. The average American male programmer is 31.6 years old.

stack-ageMeanwhile, just 5.8 percent identified as female. The remaining 2.1 percent either declined to respond or elected "other."

stack-answers

Although the survey found the programming world is not outright hostile to women looking to break in, it could afford to do more.

And that is where WordPress comes in — it is a no-cost, or relatively low-cost enterprise. Users can work with it on their schedules. Most importantly, it has an open trove of information and a community willing to guide the perplexed user.

Yet where WordPress enthusiasts have occasionally fallen short is with WordCamps, WordPress-centric conferences for the casual or professional user with a universal thirst for open source.

Stories of WordCamp sexual harassment have been shared — take, for instance, WPTavern journalist's Sarah Gooding's account of being propositioned by another WordCamp attendee.

Fortunately, organizers for certain WordCamps have developed conduct. Still, not all WordCamps have conduct codes yet and even for the ones that do, victims of sexual harassment are still reluctant to report the violations.

The reasons for keeping quiet are fairly obvious — people don't want to churn drama. They're afraid. They're worried they overreacted. And the list goes on.

But there's also another explanation: the concept of "the missing stair."

"Have you ever been in a house that had something just egregiously wrong with it? Something massively unsafe and uncomfortable and against code, but everyone in the house had been there a long time and was used to it? 'Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you, there's a missing step on the unlit staircase with no railings. But it's okay, because we all just remember to just jump over it.'"

"Some people are that missing stair," blogger Cliff Pervocracy writes.

Friedrich said she has always been treated well at WordCamps. But absence of her mistreatment does not reduce the experiences of the individuals who have experienced it.

WordPress propels itself on its community. That community has yielded an extraordinarily productive subculture, one that is birthed countless entrepreneurs and their successive ventures. But productivity means little if it has achieved by way of insult or intimidation. That is a lesson worth knowing far before anything else.

What Is a Pansexual? 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

@elleuk #october2015 ❤️❤️❤️ shot by @mattirwinlondon

A photo posted by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus) on Aug 27, 2015 at 9:25pm PDT

In a new interview with Elle UK, pop icon Miley Cyrus comes out as a "pansexual," and now the little-known word is trending like crazy. So, we're here to answer the question, "What is a pansexual?"

Here's what you need to know:

1. Pansexuals, aka Omnisexuals, Feel Love or Attraction Toward People of Any Sex or Gender Identity

found this and thought i should post it😔 #asexual #bi #bisexual #demisexual #pansexual

A photo posted by 💙haley demuth💙 make it green😊^ (@happy._.da._.cat) on Aug 28, 2015 at 10:31am PDT

A pansexual can also be referred to as an omnisexual, and the word refers to someone who feels "sexual attraction, romantic love, or emotional attraction toward people of any sex or gender identity." A pansexual person believes that gender and sex are insignificant or irrelevant when it comes to sexual or emotional attraction to another.

2. Pansexuality Is Not the Same Thing as Bisexuality

Pansexuality Definition, What Is A Pansexual, What Is Pansexuality, Miley Cyrus Pansexual, Is Pansexual The Same As Bisexual, Miley Cyrus Bisexual

Bisexuality is sexual or romantic attraction to "more than one gender or same and different genders" — while pansexuality is the attraction to a person of any sex or gender. Pansexuals can be attracted to cisgender people, transgender people, intersex people, androgynous people, and anyone else.

For more information on bisexuality vs. pansexuality, please click here, as the terms can be widely interpreted.

3. There Is a Pansexual Flag With Its Own Colors Pansexuality Definition, What Is A Pansexual, What Is Pansexuality, Miley Cyrus Pansexual, Is Pansexual The Same As Bisexual, Miley Cyrus Bisexual

(Pansexual Pride Flag)

The Pansexual Pride Flag was created to increase visibility and recognition for the pansexual community. It has three colored horizontal bars of pink, yellow and blue. The blue represents those who identify within the male spectrum (regardless of biological sex), the pink represents those who identify within the female spectrum (regardless of biological sex), and the yellow portion represents non-binary attraction — such as androgynous, agender, bigender, genderfluid, transgender and intersex people.

4. The Term Is Credited to Sigmund Freud, but It Originally Had a Different Meaning pansexual

Sigmund Freud. (Wikipedia)

The pan prefix stems from the Ancient Greek term meaning "every" or "all," while omni is Latin, meaning "all." Pansexual comes from the word pansexualism, which dates back to 1917. Pansexualism at the time was a concept describing the ubiquitous influence of sexual instinct in all human activity. The term, often credited to Sigmund Freud, originally meant "the pervasion of all conduct and experience with sexual emotions."

Sitting down with Elle UK, Cyrus labels herself as a pansexual, saying:

I'm very open about it – I'm pansexual. But I'm not in a relationship. I'm 22, I'm going on dates, but I change my style every two weeks, let alone who I'm with.

Additional pansexual celebrities include Angel Haze, Sophie B. Hawkins, Jazz Jennings, politician Mary González, and Dreya Weber.

In recent years Miley has become a vocal LGBT activist, and her ability to make pansexual trend today is more evidence of the young star's power as an agent for social change and understanding.

Homeless in Vancouver: Oh говно! Semalt is back

Well I see that the spamming Russian website Semalt has managed to sneak back into my blog traffic statistics under "Referrers"—not using its actual name, of course, but the generic alias: "video–production.com".

Oh yes, this one is certainly spam! Stanley Q. Woodvine

Clicking on the harmless-looking referrer link takes you to the latest incarnation of Semalt—not flogging search engine optimization this time, but rather offering cheap video production.

Money up front, of course!

How it works: first they take your money. Semalt

But new business model aside, it's still the same old Semalt referrer link spam—a trick that became so much of a problem for bloggers over a year and a half ago that WordPress.com was forced to create a new feature just to block it.

The root of all evil referrer link spam

The Semalt.com website first cane to the attention of the blogging community late in December 2013, when mysterious and provocative "referrer links" began showing up in the traffic stats of millions of blogs—all for:

semalt.com/competitors_review.php?u=http://whateveryourblogis.com

Referrer links normally show which websites your blog traffic has come from (how many visitors came to your blog from a Google search and so on). Bloggers can also use them like a breadcrumb trail to go back to the referring website.

Inquisitive bloggers who clicked on the Semalt referrer link were taken to a sales pitch for some kind of search engine optimization—but to find out exactly what kind, they were required to sign up for a free seven-day trial.

The Russian web site was offering something that frankly all bloggers wanted—improved page rankings in Google search results—and so, to introduce itself to the most potential customers in its target market in the shortest time, Semalt resorted to a novel deception. Rather than spamming through the front door, in the form of fake comments to posts—which blogs are good at filtering out—Semalt tried to sneak its spam advertising in through the unguarded back door, in the form of fake referrer links to its SEO sales pitch.

For two months, Semalt rained hundreds of millions of a growing variety of spam referrer links down on tens of millions of blogs (it was not unusual to receive 20 such links a day). An outcry arose. Semalt was not only annoying bloggers, it was seriously screwing up their blog traffic statistics!

Back when Semalt was a dangerous thing to refer to

The parent of all spam referrer links and the feature that it spawned. Stanley Q. Woodvine

Finally, on February 23, WordPress.com introduced the option to flag a website domain as a spam referrer, which had the effect of masking the domain from ever showing up in traffic statistics.

As I discovered that day, when I tried to publish a post about the new spam referrer flag, WordPress had also set up a sensitive keyword tripwire behind the scenes.

Publishing the post, with its numerous references to "Semalt" instanly twanged this tripwire and I found my blog suspended by WordPress.com for some 13 frustrating hours.

But all that trouble is in the past now, right? I can easily banish Semalt's (or anyone else's) click-bait referrer spam from my traffic stats with a simple click of my cursor.

Anyway, with all these mentions of a certain spammy website, I certainly hope that it's all in the the past. Guess I'll know in just a moment, when I click the "Publish" button…

How to Create a WordPress Website – The Do’s and Dont’s

So you are probably looking to build your first website, right? Most can easily create their first wordpress website up and running, but they struggle after that. Simply because they have not prepared for how are they going to get visitors, or what we like to call traffic, to their website. And ultimately convert them into email subscribers or buyers. And in this articles I'm going to discuss the do's and dont's.

Let's start with the don'ts

DONT'S

1) Don't expect once you have your website up – even if it's beautiful that there will be people screaming all wanting to check out your site and read what it is all about. That is not going to happen. Unless you're Justin Beiber and have 37 Million Followers on Instagram that he can't post a picture saying his new website is up.

2) Don't build a website just to make "six figures". Yes, there are a lot of courses, products, coaching programs that teach you to make "six figures" per year. The course may be good and you may even make that money (but do expect to work hard at it every day). But making six figures is meaningless, and only once you get there you'll realise what I mean. But you have to have a reason greater than just making six figures, The website/business has to be something that interests you, your passion, something you love to talk about and if you didn't get paid a dime to do it – you'd still do it. And in many cases, it's those with a greater purpose really excel and reach another level of success.

3) Don't do the easy things. There are going to be many tempting services that claim to get you quick results. But are they lasting results. Here is a quote that I also preach. I'm not sure who it is from but its "do what's easy, life will be hard. do what's hard, life will be easy." Do the things what 99% aren't doing, don't try to copy, figure out your own unique selling proposition.

Now to the Do's

DO'S

1) Do take things one at a time. What I mean by this is to schedule your week – so you focus on one major area of your website per day. For example. Content writing day, Recording Day Etc. Then you have your editing day, brainstorming day and publishing day. It's much more effective to do one thing per day. It's like in the gym, you don't train every single part of your body all in one day – seven days a week. You work on one body part per day. And then allow it to rest.

2) Do expect building a website as if you were building a real business. Nothing is going to come easy, I can tell you that. Even though it may seem easy. The hard part is not the technical aspects, the hard part is your mentality. Your business/website will only be as good as yourself. Focus on self development, gaining knowledge, doing things the hard way and you'll be ahead of 99% of the people who own a website.

3) Do write or build the best resource for your niche. Anything else, you are going to fail. Don't just people to write articles for 5 bucks and post it your website expecting you're going to make sales and make money. No. You're going to spending a few days or even weeks researching what you are going to write and build beforehand. You'll have to write something that blows your competition out of the water. That's the only way you'll grow and be successful. And that's the same as anything in life. I hope you enjoyed my short article on what you need to do and NOT do in order to build a successful website.

A Marketer's Guide To Choosing A WordPress Theme

how to choose a wordpress theme

If you're in charge of marketing at a small or a medium sized company, you have enough on your plate to work on, and troubleshooting your website shouldn't be one of them. That's why you need to build your website on a platform that allows you to easily design according to your organizations brand standards, manage your content, and make modifications without diving into code. WordPress is the world's leading content management and blogging platform and helps you accomplish all of that, plus its themes allow you to customize and build a site suited to your needs.

Picking the right WordPress theme is crucial to your websites success; there's a lot to think about and consider. After all, most people come to your website to learn about what you offer, get contact information, or to make a purchase. The right theme makes a great first impression, delivers a good experience, and helps your visitors do what they need to do. Most importantly, it helps you achieve your business goals.

Before deciding on the right theme for your website here are a few things you need to consider.

Website Goals

The right WordPress theme closely aligns with your websites goals.

What is the main purpose of your website? Is it to provide information about your product? Generate leads? Generate sales?

Clearly defined goals help you narrow down the type of theme most appropriate for your website. If your only goal is to build authority and provide information, your theme selection criteria differ from using your site as an online store.

Current and Future Needs

A good way to think about your next theme is to consider if it will serve your needs today, next month, and next year.

Review the theme's update history, and make note if it has been able to keep pace with web design, digital marketing trends and technological innovations.

When Google explicitly stated that they would promote mobile friendly sites in mobile search, was your theme already mobile friendly? Or did you have to wait for the developer to release a mobile friendly version?

Look for themes developed by those who submerse themselves in latest technologies, who keep innovating and are able to gauge and understand how users interact with the web.

Your Web Development Skills

Developers are constantly improving their themes, and not just to make your site look and work better but to make it easier to customize without knowing code.

If you have web development skills you already know how to push the limits of your website theme and make custom modifications. But if you lack these skills, fear not. Many of the most popular themes come with enough options to make your site look truly unique.

Seek out themes that will allow you to do what you need without digging into code, so you can be in control of customization.

Access to Developers

web developer working

If your website needs go beyond the theme's customization options, make sure you have access to the skills of a web developer or at least a budget to outsource any work. Otherwise you need to make compromises with the theme limitations and revise your website needs.

SEO

SEO is a beast. With over 200 known ranking factors, you need to select a theme that is SEO friendly. With so many ranking factors, it's unrealistic to go through every one and test each theme against every item on the SEO list.

Instead, stick to the top themes that have been tried and tested by other users. Read the theme descriptions and look for details mentioning how exactly the theme is SEO friendly. Look for things like: fast page load speeds, mobile friendliness, quality code, security, and if it is built with up to date technology. These details reveal and gauge the theme developer's commitment to SEO.

Customizability

Most popular themes are loaded with all kinds of bells and whistles. It's nice to have options and settings at your disposal, but you also need to consider their ease of use.

When choosing a theme, ask a developer to grant you access to an admin panel to test drive the theme. Have your needs list ready in hand and go through the admin panel to see if you're able to customize the theme according to your website specs without having to dig into code.

Speed

Speed was mentioned earlier, but it deserves its own section. It's impossible to stress enough how important website speed is. It allows search engines to crawl and index your pages faster, and it provides a good user experience.

If the page loads too slow users bounce and move onto your competitor's site.

If you can't remember the last time you waited more than five seconds for a page to load, neither can your potential customers.

Mobile friendliness

browsing the web on a phone

Your website needs to be mobile friendly.

As the smartphone market continues to grow so does the amount of mobile web browsing. Many of us use our phones and other mobile devices to access the internet not just while waiting in line, but as a primary device to browse and communicate with others.

On top of that, Google recently made mobile friendliness a ranking signal. This means that during a web search done on a mobile device, Google favors mobile friendly results.

Design

pencils-design

Ever hear the old adage you don't get a second chance to make a first impression? When you attract new visitors to your website you need to make them stay there.

One way to accomplish this is with a good design and layout. I'm not saying you need to hire an award winning art director to dazzle visitors with glossy graphics and HD videos, but you need to create a pleasant user experience. Some themes are too basic and uber-modern, others are just too cluttered. Find a happy medium that meets your website wishlist, compliments your brand and can help you fulfill your website goals.

Integration with other software

A WordPress theme can't do everything alone. Most websites running a WordPress theme have third party plugins and integrations powering many of their functionalities. Everything from social share counters to lead capture forms are powered by third party plugins.

When testing and evaluating a theme investigate whether your current integrations work with it or what needs to be changed.

Support

Technical support is one of the most important considerations you need to make when purchasing a new theme. It may not be a critical factor if you have a dedicated developer on your team, but if you're a solo marketer in your organization technical support is a must have.

Look for developers that provide a dedicated support channel, be it forums or a direct email address. Depending on the complexity of your theme and your web development skills, it's worth upgrading to premium support if available.

Reviews

Reviews are critical deciding factor. Don't just look at the star ratings; actually read the reviews, both negative and positive. Learn what others like about the theme, dislike, challenges to its use, and where improvements can be made.

Pay attention to developers responses. How do they respond to the reviews? How quickly? Based on their responses would you want to do business with them? Do you feel confident they're able to provide you with the support you need?

You can even take it a step further and reach out to other users to get their feedback directly.

Theme updates

WordPress developers are constantly innovating and updating the platform to include the latest features, bug fixes, and security updates. Is the theme you consider to purchase just as consistent? Will the theme be updated in time for the next WordPress release? Sometimes small releases don't affect theme functionalities, but as technology gets more advanced you can assume that your theme may lose some functionality.

During your evaluation process review the update history of your shortlisted themes. Learn how often the theme was updated, what goes into the updates, if it was updated before or after a major WordPress update, and what impact the update has on your theme setup.

Next Steps Where to Buy

A good place is ThemeForest, where you can browse through 5400+ themes. You can search by keywords, browse theme categories, and filter by ratings and number of sales to help you narrow down options. But ThemeForest isn't the only place to find good themes. There are many other theme shops that are often run by the developers themselves such as StudioPress and Woothemes.

Try Before You Buy

WordPress themes are relatively inexpensive, but your time and resources could run high if you pick a theme without testing it first. All themes have demos of their capabilities and most of the time the demo is what the site would look like to a visitor; rarely you'll get access to the admin panel. Although many developers will go into great detail about administrator and customization options in their theme description and provide screenshots, its important to inquire about admin panel access. Sometimes developers already have a demo admin account for you to login to but they do not advertise it. If they do not have the option, inquire about previous versions of the theme for you to test drive on your own development server. Having a hands-on trial with the admin panel gives you a sense of how much effort you need to put into making the theme fit your website needs list.

Picking the right WordPress theme is crucial to your websites success. Consider all of the points discussed before committing to a theme. There isn't a theme that's strong in every area. Sometimes you have to give up on excessive customizability for lightning fast speed, or choose a prettier theme but give up some speed. It doesn't matter what you favour or give up as long as your site performs better tomorrow than it did yesterday.

WordPress Compromises Behind Spike in Neutrino EK Traffic

Unsurprisingly, a rash of compromised WordPress websites is behind this week's surge in Neutrino Exploit Kit traffic, researchers at Zscaler said.

In a report published yesterday, Zscaler said it spotted attacks against sites running older versions of the content management system, 4.2 and earlier. Those sites are backdoored and redirect a victim's browser through iframes to a landing page hosting the exploit kit where a Flash exploit awaits.

The exploits generally target Internet Explorer, Zscaler said, and victims' computers are eventually infected with CryptoWall 3.0 ransomware.

This analysis is in line with a similar report from the SANS Institute, which pointed the finger at a particular cybercrime group that had steered away from using the prolific Angler Exploit Kit and moved operations to Neutrino.

Researchers at both outfits said the primary IP address for the Neutrino landing page is 185[.]44[.]105[.]7, registered to a "Max Vlapet" in Moscow.

Zscaler said that it has spotted more than 2,600 unique sites running WordPress involved in the current Neutrino spike, serving up more than 4,000 infected pages.

"The goal of this campaign is to completely and fully compromise the site, which includes adding a webshell, harvesting credentials, and finally injecting an iframe that loads a Neutrino landing page," Zscaler researchers John Mancuso and Deepen Desai wrote. "The iframe is injected into the compromised site immediately after the BODY tag, and is almost identical to recent Angler samples."

Users who are not running IE are not served the iframe, Zscaler said, adding that cookies prevent the same user from being served the same iframe over and over.

Zscaler shares its analysis of the Flash exploit in Neutrino and points out that as of yesterday, detection for it among security companies was "poor." The payload is CryptoWall 3.0, the latest version of the virulent ransomware that has this summer almost exclusively been spreading from exploit kits, Angler in particular. Some spam campaigns earlier this summer were also pushing CryptoWall.

Like other ransomware families, Cryptowall 3.0 encrypts files stored on a compromised computer and demands a ransom, usually $500 payable in Bitcoin, in exchange for the encryption key. The malware uses numerous channels to communicate and send stolen traffic to its keepers, including I2P and Tor anonymity networks.

As for Neutrino, it's apparently on the rise among the ranks of exploit kits. Angler remains the most dangerous because its keepers quickly integrate exploits for newly reported zero days, and this recent spike of Neutrino traffic could be linked to a number of reasons: perhaps this actor was banned from purchasing Angler; a steep pricing change; or this could merely be a test run using Neutrino.

"If this change indicates a trend, we might see a large amount of compromised websites pointing to Neutrino EK, along with a corresponding drop in Angler EK traffic," wrote SANS ISC handler and Rackspace security engineer Brad Duncan. "However, criminal groups using these EKs have quickly changed tactics in the past, and the situation may change by the time you read this."

In the meantime, WordPress remains a soft spot for hackers. More often than not, attackers find and exploit vulnerabilities in plugins and extensions for the CMS, but there have been occasions where the WordPress core engine has been attacked.

"WordPress compromises are not new, but this campaign shows an interesting underground nexus starting with backdoored WordPress sites, a Neutrino Exploit Kit-controlled server, and the highly effective CryptoWall ransomware," Zscaler said. "This campaign also reconfirms that Neutrino Exploit Kit activity is on the rise and is still a major player in the exploit kit arena."
