Discussing: The Reinvention Curse

I have this theory about certain video game franchises. This theory, which I've hastily called the reinvention curse, states that when a video game series reinvents itself with a new iteration and receives widespread acclaim, it is then cursed to attempt to recreate that one title but with worse and worse results. As most do, the clones, sort of speak, become less and less accurate and quality deteriorates. There are several franchise that could fall under this theory but the two best examples, and the ones I'll be using to describe this theory, are The Legend of Zelda and Resident Evil.

The Legend of Zelda franchise started off fairly simple. You were given the simple premise to collect the Triforce to save Princess Zelda and were let loose in an open ended world to discover hidden items and areas and conquer dungeons and bosses. Zelda 2 changed that by making it a side scrolling action game with an overworld map and light RPG elements. This didn't go over as well as the first game so it returned to the original's style for Link to the Past but with many upgrades, including two worlds, a detailed map, more items to use, more secrets, better control, better balanced difficulty, and more.

However, then came Ocarina of Time. Regardless of what you think of the game, the general consensus is that it's a landmark in game development. It's often cited as one of the greatest games ever made, if not the greatest. Unfortunately, Nintendo is aware of this and every major entry in the Zelda series since then have been very similar to Ocarina, with only minor changes. Majora's Mask had abilities associated with masks, a time limit, and darker subject matter, Wind Waker had boat elements and a cel-shaded graphical style, Twilight Princess had the wolf form and a dark aesthetic, and Skyward Sword had…motion controls.

Again, regardless of what you think of these games, not much has changed since Ocarina of Time. Sure, it can be argued that Majora is noticeably different due to its focus on side quests, and time management and Wind Waker improved on several game mechanics to make it better playing compared to Ocarina. However, all these games have the same type of story beats to them and the same gameplay formula. Where Zelda essentially kept reinventing itself with its first three installments, that has effectively stopped with Ocarina of Time as it keeps trying to recreate what was done with that title and with Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, it can be agreed upon that the quality has definitely decreased.

Resident Evil is slightly different. Where Zelda reinvented itself early on in order to try new ideas, Resident Evil stayed with the formula created with its first game. Some were better than the first game (Resident Evil 2) and some were worse (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis). However, eventually quality didn't matter anymore as it just became old. So the franchise needed to reinvent itself if it wanted to survive. Resident Evil 4 was a comeback for the series and to this day often included in best of lists. However, when it came time to release a sequel, Capcom essentially just cloned RE4.

Resident Evil 5 plays like a knockoff of the previous game but with a buddy system that only really works well in multiplayer and nothing new to offer. However, even worse is Resident Evil 6, which is essentially a clone of a clone. Where RE4 blended action elements with horror, and RE5 tried but failed to be scary, RE6 doesn't even try to be a horror game and instead is an uninspired third person shooter that feels closer to Gears of War than Resident Evil. This is probably a better example of this theory as while all three games play similarly, the cloning process divulged into the mess that RE6 is.

So that's my reinvention curse theory. In my opinion, the only way to pull out of the cycle is to reinvent again and prevent copying that effort. Both Zelda and Resident Evil could pull out of this cycle and I think they might. That new Zelda title coming to Wii U (and possibly the unreleased NX) is supposed to be open world, which would be a big change for the franchise, and the recent Resident Evil Revelations games, while not perfect, show Capcom trying to get back to the series' horror roots. Big Bite chosen for WordPress VIP Partner programme

Big Bite in Teesside has become one of just 10 WordPress VIP partners.

Creating and managing websites is very simple and easy nowadays, with many online services that let you create websites quickly.

WordPress is the world's most popular content management system to create websites and blogs, if you want a simple blog you can start a free blog at WordPress.com, using one of these top WordPress tutorials to help you along the way. But if you are a power user and want more control over your blog then you will need to set up a self-hosted WordPress blog via WordPress.org.

WordPress blogger patch foot-drag nag: You're tempting hackers

Misconfigured and unpatched WordPress sites are causing a rash of problems both to themselves and the wider internet. In fact, this ever-present internet security threat has flared up again over the last week because of several new issues.

The most pressing problem involves a recent brute force amplification attack on WordPress-based website via the XML-RPC API. Researchers at Sucuri discovered a way to carry out the attacks against WordPress' built-in XML-RPC feature.

More details of a proof of concept demo of the flaw can be found here.

The vulnerability allows an attacker to bypass web server rate limits. The practical upshot is instead of limiting websites to one query with a one password at a time, the flaw means a hacker can now send one query with 500 passwords via XML-RPC API.

XML-RPC is a protocol for securely exchanging data across the internet. The technology supports the ability for an application to execute multiple commands within one HTTP request.

Attacks are happening against WordPress sites, so the bug is far from merely theoretical. El Reg has seen evidence that the XML-RPC vulnerability is being actively abused by hackers for all manner of malfeasance, from brute forcing passwords to attempting to take sites down.

Regular sites are getting affected by attack traffic even though the main brunt of the attack is being thrown against sites using the popular CMS platforms.

Separately, WordPress users need to make sure their Akismet anti-spam plugin is up to date following the discovery of an unrelated security bug. The vulnerability might potentially be exploited through cross-site scripting attacks.

Lastly, security researchers at Swiss firm High-Tech Bridge have identified a critical vulnerability in WordPress's Gwolle Guestbook plugin, which has over 10,000 active installations. The vulnerability, a PHP File inclusion, could result in an attacker controlling a filename or reading and writing files, as well as created the potential for hackers to push arbitrary code onto target systems.

WordPress has a bad name when it comes to security but vulnerabilities are normally patched quickly.

3 simple ways to start your WordPress site security without plugins

The information in this article applies mainly to self-hosted WordPress sites, not to sites on WordPress.com.

Your self-hosted WordPress site is only as secure as you take the time to make it, and you definitely want to take the time to make your WordPress site secure.

There are many security plugins available to help you with this, many of which have so many moving parts that it is hard to know exactly how to configure them in the best way to secure WordPress without locking yourself out of your own site at the same time.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to start you on your way to securing WordPress that do not include fumbling and stumbling through a lot of settings and options in plugins. Here are three:

One...

Never use your domain name, site title or your own name as your administrative (admin) username.

We learned long ago to never use (or stop using) admin as our username on our WordPress sites, but almost equally as egregious as using admin as a username is to make your login easy to discover by using your domain name, site title or your own name.

Let's say the domain for your WordPress site is allmywidgets.com, your site title is Widgets R Us and your own name is Wendell Widget. You would not want to use allmywidgets, widgetsrus or wendellwidget as your administrative username.

Why?

After hackers try figuring out your login credentials by using admin as the username first, they are then most likely to next try the name of your site, your site title and/or the name(s) in the by-line of your posts and/or pages.

If they guess right, then they have one half of the combination they need to hack into your WordPress site.

Consider making your username something only you and a very small group of other people would know. Do not be afraid to include numbers and/or random characters in your username, too, especially if you insist on using your domain name, site name and/or real name as your username.

Once your WordPress site is established, you are not allowed to change the username via the WordPress Dashboard, but there are two other ways to accomplish this.

Two...

Never leave your administrative username as your display name.

When you set up your user account to be able to log into your WordPress site, the username you choose is automatically set as the name that will be displayed publicly when you create posts/pages.

To change what gets displayed to your website-viewing audience, hover over Users and choose Your Profile. Find the field Nickname and change it to something other than your username.

Below Nickname, you will see Display name publicly as. Click the down arrow to see your choices.

You can either fill in the First Name and Last Name fields and use a combination of those two fields, or you can choose to use the new display name you have just entered. Consider making your Nickname something like Subscriber or even Author if you decide not to use a combination of your first and last name.

Three...

Never use your administrative username on posts and/or pages.

When you are the only person who creates posts and/or pages on your site, you sometimes forget there are other roles available in your self-hosted WordPress site.

You should create another account with the role of Author for posts/pages.

Subscriber will not work, because you will not be able to assign posts/pages to a subscriber account. Since the Editor and Contributor roles have more permissions, and therefore more access to back-end options, shy away from assigning either of those roles to the account you are going to use for posts/pages.

It is totally fine to create the posts/pages while logged in as the administrator, but before the post/page goes live you should change the author of the post to the account of the role of the Author you set up.

Even if a hacker gets into the Author account, there is only so much damage the hacker can do since the Author role has limited capabilities in the back-end of your WordPress.

Please keep in mind that these are three, simple security measures you can take without plugins, but they should not be the only security measures you take to secure your WordPress site.
