PayPal et al: When your web site gets kicked in the SaaS

With the proliferation of easy-to-install Web sites and hosting providers, small business owners, nonprofit operators, and even departmental teams inside much bigger organizations are putting up sites and collecting a few bucks.

In fact, you can think of all the Web hosting service providers out there as the original SaaS -- Software-as-a-Service -- providers. As an example, cPanel (the tool the vast majority of Web hosting customers use to manage their sites) was launched a full eight years before Gmail.

Web hosting was SaaS before SaaS was cool.

Lowering the barrier of entry Special Feaure

The Industry Cloud: Why It's Next

Coud computing has engulfed lots of IT, but one of the untapped regions of the tech and business world is the industry cloud, focusing on vertical industries and more specialized applications.

Over the years, the barrier of entry to setting up a basic Web site has gotten lower and lower, and the capabilities and overall look and feel of those Web sites has gotten better and better. Wix promises a Web site that's "Just a click away." Squarespace promises "Perfect Web sites." And the open source WordPress, which lets you host your own Web site and modify it to your heart's content, promises their "famous 5-minute install."

The difference between Wix and Squarespace, and tools like WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal is that the first two are completely hosted solutions and you have very limited opportunity to modify functionality. WordPress, too, has a hosted solution at WordPress.com, and like Wix and Squarespace, you can't modify your sites all that much -- but the company handles everything.

Content management systems

By contrast, once you get into the world of content management systems or blogging software, which is where WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal fit, you can do everything from a simple 5-minute install to building incredibly deep and complex code and systems.

I got started with WordPress about seven years ago when I migrated the ZATZ sites to WordPress. They ran in another open source environment called UserLand Frontier, but it had been all but abandoned -- and a key piece of code was not open source, but compiled by a company that no longer existed. I wanted to get the ZATZ Archive containing almost 75,000 articles onto a platform that would have a future.

My transition to WordPress was not a 5-minute install. It took three years to write all the code that would replicate my proprietary ZENPRESS content management system and run it in WordPress. Like most platforms of its type, WordPress is extensible and supports plugins. I wrote a bunch of them to replicate the code I had in the original ZENPRESS.

And that's where we start to see the difference between the surface of some of these systems and the depth underneath the water. It used to be that to install a plugin, you had to FTP into a server, upload the files, and move them into the right directories. Heck, it used to be that to install WordPress, you had to do the same thing.

Now, most hosting users just click on Softaculous (or something similar) and the magic happens behind the scenes. Many hosting providers sell WordPress hosting accounts that are all set up without any configuration required.

The impact of this has not been inconsiderable. WordPress currently powers 26.2 percent of all Web sites. Of those using any sort of content management system, WordPress has 59.2 percent of the market.

In other words, it's a fair bet to assume that if someone is building a Web site, especially one where they're not hand-coding the HTML, the odds are they're building it in WordPress.

It's not IT, it's point-and-click

But "building it" is a stretch. Back before I adopted a bunch of unattended WordPress plugins, I thought those "building" WordPress had some technical skills. As I've come to find out, because the barrier of entry is so low, sites are being pointed-and-clicked into existence, and the operators who are making and relying on them often have pretty much zero technical knowledge.

You know how it is when you go to Thanksgiving dinner and the whole family has been looking forward to seeing you? Yeah, you know it's not because they love your personality. They want to get their gear fixed, and they know it's probably one of only two or three times during the year that you're making a house call.

Yep, most WordPress site operators are like your family. Most have no idea what CSS is. An inspector to them is French and bumbles around solving crimes. They wouldn't know how to set up iptables or edit Apache or Nginx configuration files, or heaven forbid, install an SSL certificate and update their Web site to route https requests properly.

Remember that last one. We'll come back to it in a few minutes.

The plumbing underneath

But despite their lack of mad IT skills, make no mistake about it. These folks are engaged in some pretty complex IT. They're building mashups, linking their sites to other SaaS service providers, and relying on data interconnections that they can't even describe.

They're sending mailing list data into MailChimp. They're posting tweets automatically to Twitter. They're latching into Google Analytics and Adwords for analytics and some side income. And they're using e-commerce providers and payment gateways to bring in cash.

All of this is horrifyingly fragile, dependent on protocols and interconnects between vendors that often don't even talk to each other.

A rant for the ages

One of the best examples of this fragility comes via a post-rant by Maciej Ceglowski, the creator of Pinboard. Not to be confused with Pinterest, Pinboard is kind of a next-generation Delicious, a bookmarking site of sorts. As social networking sites go, Pinboard isn't huge. But it's still got tens of thousands of users.

Pinboard is SaaS and many of Pinboard's users connect to other SaaS services using IFTTT, literally If-this-then-that. IFTTT is plumbing that reacts to events on some services and triggers events on others. It's glue -- but it's glue that needs ingredients in the form of some communications protocols that connect the services.

Apparently, out of the blue, IFTTT changed its protocol and then sent a demanding letter to Ceglowski, threatening him if he didn't make Pinboard compatible. His rant is priceless.

The point of this is that we're all more and more reliant on not just the SaaS services we are consciously signing into, but also on the hidden plumbing that connects these services. Oddly enough, it mostly works, even though most of the players don't know each other, and sometimes compete.

I'll paint you a picture. Have you ever blasted down a long stretch of highway, where the only thing between you and the cars going in the other direction was a thin yellow line? You don't know them and they don't know you, but everyone agrees to generally stay in their lanes. It shouldn't work, but it does.

That's our world of SaaS and interoperability.

PayPal and security

Not everyone gets into a newly classic snit like Pinboard's creator, but many companies that provide key services do struggle with the compatibility issue. And that brings us to PayPal.

I have a better insight into this than I might otherwise have had because one of the plugins I adopted a year ago turns out to connect to PayPal.

Okay. That's kind of an understatement. Seamless Donations is all about collecting donations for nonprofits and processing those donations through PayPal. This is no small thing. Seamless Donations is the most popular donations plugin for WordPress. More than 4,000 people downloaded it just last week.

Seamless Donations is small potatoes, though, compared to the big WordPress e-commerce systems, like Easy Digital Downloads and WooCommerce. WooCommerce, for example, is a WordPress plugin that runs nearly 30 percent of the entire Web's ecommerce sites. There's huge value in that. Automattic, the company behind WordPress, bought WooThemes (the company behind WooCommerce) for something in the neighborhood of $30 million.

Links in a chain

As you probably know, collecting money online is a multi-vendor proposition. The donation sites and e-commerce sites don't process the money. That's usually done through gateway systems that talk to the big credit card processing financial systems.

There are usually a bunch of links in the chain from the e-commerce site to the shopping cart software to the payment gateway to the credit card provider to the bank. Those linkages, all the "to the" items I mentioned in the previous sentence, are very attractive targets to hackers, organized crime, terrorist organizations, and rogue nation states.

In other words, on one end of the system you have Uncle Ralph who wants to sell baseball cards and at the other side, you have Kim Jung Un, who would really, really wants to drop a nuke on all of us, including Uncle Ralph.

Since Kim either hasn't been allowed to play with the big-boy toys (or they never seem to work), North Korea's leader has had to settle for ordering teams of hackers to break into not just corporate sites to steal money and secrets, but sites operated by folks like Uncle Ralph.

To be honest, most e-commerce solutions and gateways give me the willies, because they actually take credit card information in on public Web sites and then transmit that information to processors. Yes, those sites have to be secured with SSL, but as we've seen, SSL has its weaknesses.

SSL also adds complexity to Web site operations, requiring certificate requests, certificates, more options in conf files, and some expense. Up until recently, validated SSL certificates were rather costly. That's changing, which is good for the nonprofits I work with.

But PayPal has been different. First, it was one of the very first online monetary transaction processors, so it had quite a lot of first mover advantage. Its services have grown up over the years, but at its very basic, PayPal still offers a chunk of HTML you can paste into your page and get a Buy button.

One slight step up is building a form on your Web page that redirects the user to PayPal's servers to get account and financial information. This code has a number of benefits. It's relatively easy to set up, it's free (except for the percentage points PayPal skims off the top), and all the confidential information never lives on the original site.

For many getting into online commerce, that was the winner. Not only didn't they have to worry about storing confidential financial information, they also didn't have to know from SSL or complex security protocols.

That made the barrier of entry to collecting money about as easy as clicking a button. And so, almost all of the e-commerce solutions and donation solutions (mine included) provided PayPal as the entry point for e-commerce.

The coming PayPal-mageddon

But the folks at PayPal aren't stupid. They know that even though no real confidential information travels from originating sites to their servers, it's only a matter of time before the bad guys break something. So for the past year or so, PayPal has been warning of a transition to SSL.

Part of that transition hit users last week. Suddenly, it was impossible to use the sandbox without an https-based URL. Sandboxes are test environments most e-commerce providers set up so users can test their carts before going live.

special feature

How To Make IT More Agile

Business executives are increasingly moving to an IT environment that is no longer focused on big, long projects but shorter, more sustainable efforts to drive change and innovation. Here are the pros and cons, and how to make it happen.

While PayPal had been warning of the move, their guidance page said "Ready now" not "You better be ready now." A reading of the fine print does show that PayPal intended this transition to shut off non-SSL use of their sandbox, but it was fine print -- not the big block of warning for their next step, what I've taken to calling PayPal-mageddon.

That's in September. On September 30, 2016, PayPal will stop accepting Internet payment notifications from live sites that are not using SSL. From a security point of view, this is a good thing. But from an all-hell's-gonna-break-loose point of view, oh my.

In September, anyone using PayPal who hasn't transitioned to the new security protocols will no longer be able to take money. Period. Money won't change hands. For those who haven't updated their sites, the flow of money will come to a screeching halt. This may affect a large percentage of the Internet.

I'll use Seamless Donations as an example. When I adopted it, it was at version 3.x. I did a pile of mods and moved it up to 4.x. As of now, 77.2 percent are running one of 15 4.0.x releases. But that means that 22.8 percent haven't upgraded and probably haven't paid any attention to the operation of the site, except for letting the donations flow into their accounts.

For just my plugin alone, we're talking about thousands of active sites, all of whom will stop seeing donations process on September 30. And who do you think they're going to yell at? It won't be PayPal, at least at first. It will be me and all the others who provide a PayPal gateway.

Winter is coming More great project ideas

DIY-IT Project Guide

Updated: If you're working on a DIY project of your own, this comprehensive guide to tech projects is a good place to start.

Please dont take this as general bitching. Instead, take away the lesson that SaaS is somewhat fragile, especially as we start to take into account the fact that SaaS isn't really one thing, but a lot of services all interconnected in unique mashups.

We also need to take into account that our users most likely haven't thought this all through, or don't even have a concept of what's going on in the IT operations they've snapped together out of virtual Internet-based Lego blocks.

As we move more and more to the cloud, we become more and more reliant on Web-based SaaS services. Sure, it frees us up from hardware infrastructure, software maintenance, and even basic operational knowledge. But as SaaS services change their interfaces and their policies, or just shut down, expect breakage.

The big difference this time is that as IT systems fail, end-user managers will be on the front lines. The IT pros will get called in, of course, but not until things get very ugly and unsuspecting users/operators get very angry.

Hey, we in IT have always picked up the pieces. Why should this phase of user-managed mashups be any different?

By the way, I'm doing more updates on Twitter and Facebook than ever before. Be sure to follow me on Twitter at @DavidGewirtz and on Facebook at Facebook.com/DavidGewirtz.

Introduction to WordPress Term Meta and WP_Term

In WordPress, you can easily save metadata for your posts, pages and other custom content types, however saving metadata for use with your taxonomies used to be an overly complex process (I even wrote a previous article about it here!).

To get it all to work you would need to save your term metadata as a field inside your wp_options table for each piece of data, meaning potentially you could have hundreds, if not thousands of extra entries if you had a decent amount of terms or just several customized taxonomies.

However, since WordPress 4.4 and beyond, terms are now objects, the same as posts, pages and custom content types. This change makes it much easier to add, remove and update your metadata.

The Backstory with Term Meta

The community has been pushing for an easy way to control term metadata since way back in WordPress 2.8. It's been a slow process, but finally terms have been re-designed from the ground up to use a class structure. This plus a few different changes in WordPress 4.4 means that terms in a taxonomy (such as 'tags', 'categories' or custom) can now have their own meta easily assigned to them.

Metadata Manipulation the Old Way

Before WordPress 4.4 there was no clear-cut way to easily save metadata for term items, this was an inherent limitation on terms from how it was constructed. If you were extending taxonomies or terms you would have to save your data directly as a site option using update_option. This wasn't ideal (as it cluttered up the options table).

I've written about extending taxonomies before, however the basics of it was when you were ready to save your metadata you would call a function that looked somthing like this:

//saving new fields for category function save_extra_taxonomy_fields($term_id){ $term = get_term($term_id); $term_slug = $term->slug; //collect category image id from posted values $term_category_image_id = isset($_POST['category_image_id']) ? sanitize_text_field($_POST['category_image_id']) : ''; //update value and save it as an option update_option('category_image_id_' . $term_slug, $term_category_image_id); } add_action('create_category','save_extra_taxonomy_fields');

In the above example we execute the function attached to the create_category hook (that triggers when we create a new category term). This will look for our value and after sanitizing will save it as an option. While this works it's not very pretty.

To work with term meta you will use the add_term_meta, update_term_meta and delete_term_meta functions. These functions when combined with new UI elements will let you save and update new metadata for your terms.

Adding Term Meta

Adding metadata for a term involves the add_term_meta function. You need to specify three parameters with an optional fourth.

  • $term_id – ID of the term you want to save this metadata to
  • $meta_key – Key name of the metadata. This is how you will reference the data
  • $meta_value – The data itself (remember to sanitize)
  • $unique (optional) – If the metadata key should be unique. By default this is set to false and means that if another key has the same name the function it will override it. Set this to true to ensure uniqueness.
  • As an example imagine that for each term in our category taxonomy we want to assign a new piece of metadata based on how many posts are assigned to this category. With WordPress 4.4 we can loop through all of the terms and save this new metadata (for use later in our theme or plugins).

    function add_featured_to_categories(){ //get all terms from the category taxonomy $taxonomy_name = 'category'; $term_args = array( 'orderby' => 'name', 'hide_empty' => false, 'fields' => 'ids' ); $terms = get_terms($taxonomy_name, $term_args); if($terms){ $term_key = 'term_size'; $term_value = 'empty'; $term_unique = true; //go through all terms and set the new term meta foreach($terms as $term_id){ $term = get_term($term_id, $taxonomy_name); $term_count = $term->count; //determine new meta value if($term_count > 10){ $term_value = 'big'; }else if($term_count >= 5 && $term_count < 10){ $term_value = 'medium'; }else if($term_count >= 1 && $term_count < 5){ $term_value = 'small'; } //save meta value add_term_meta($term_id, $term_key, $term_value, $term_unique); } } } add_action('init', 'add_featured_to_categories'); Reading Term Meta

We can read saved term meta by using the get_term_meta function. This function works in a similar way to the get_post_meta function that is used to get metadata from posts. To use this function to need to specify one mandatory parameter, with an optional two parameters available.

  • $term_id – The ID of the term to fetch metadata from
  • $key (optional) – A single specified key you want to return. If not specified then all metadata is returned.
  • $single (optional) – If a single value will be returned or a key or value pair. Defaults to a single value.
  • Let's look at another scenario where you might find this useful.

Consider a situation in which we already have term meta saved for each of our terms in our category taxonomy. This saved data contains the URL to an image that should be displayed when we are viewing the term. We want to display this image as a banner below our term description or title, but above our listing of posts.

    //given a term, collect its saved image to be displayed function display_term_meta_image($term_id, $term_taxonomy){ //get supplied term $term = get_term($term_id, $term_taxonomy); if($term){ $term_image_id = get_term_meta($term_id, 'term_image_id', true); if($term_image_id){ //get the medium image size for display $term_image = wp_get_attachment_image_src($term_image_id, 'medium', false); echo '<img src="' . $term_image[0] . '" title="' . $term->name . ' image"/>'; } } }

Now inside our category.php or other child theme template file, we can modify the functionality where our term data is displayed.

In my situation with Twenty Fourteen I'm editing the category.php file and calling our new function right after the display of the terms description info.

    //get the current object (term) $term_obj = get_queried_object(); //display meta data image for term if(function_exists('display_term_meta_image')){ display_term_meta_image($term_obj->term_id, $term_obj->taxonomy); }

This will display our photo right under the description like this:

    wp term meta banner

    Deleting Term Meta

We can remove term metadata just the same as we could for posts. When we use the delete_term_meta function we need to supply two mandatory parameters with an option third if we require.

  • $term_id – The ID of the term to work on.
  • $meta_key – The meta key that will be removed from the term.
  • $meta_value (optional) – Only delete the metadata if the value matches this value. Use this when you only want this data removed when it matches a set value.
  • Once again let's look at a scenario in which you might use this. Imagine your half way through a big project and you've already saved several pieces of meta data to each category term. You've found that some of this data you no longer need so you should probably clear it so that it doesn't clutter up your database.

    //removed metadata we no longer need for each category term function delete_old_meta_data_from_category(){ //get all category terms $terms = get_terms('category', array('hide_empty' => false, 'fields' => 'ids')); if($terms){ //list of allowed term keys $allowed_term_keys = array('term_image_id', 'term_size'); //go through all category terms foreach($terms as $term_id){ $term_meta = get_term_meta($term_id); //go through all meta for each term foreach($term_meta as $meta_key => $meta_value){ //if this meta key doesn't exist in our allowed term keys, delete it if(!array_key_exists($meta_key, $allowed_term_keys)){ delete_term_meta($term_id, $meta_key); } } } } } add_action('init', 'delete_old_meta_data_from_category');

This function will go through and remove any additional metadata we didn't specify in our $allowed_term_keys variable, cutting down on wasted space in the database (useful for when we have dozens of metadata entries we no longer need).

Backwards Compatibility with WordPress 4.3 and Older

If you were really keen on moving forward with these new meta functions but wanted to cover yourself against older versions, you could create some conditional functionality to ensure it all works.

    //add a piece of metadata for a term function add_term_meta_compat($term_id, $term_key, $term_value){ if(function_exists('add_term_meta')){ //WP4.4+ add_term_meta($term_id, $term_key, $term_value, true); }else{ //Pre WP4.4 //get term object and data $term_object = get_term($term_id); $term_taxonomy = $term_object->taxonomy; //build final key to save (tax + termid + key) $term_final_key = ($term_taxonomy . '_' . $term_id . '_' . $term_key); //ensure key isn't longer than 64 characters (max limit) $term_final_key = strlen($term_final_key > 64) ? substr($term_final_key, 0, 63) : $term_final_key; //add our new option add_option($term_final_key, $term_value); } }

We start by calling function_exists to ensure that the new add_term_meta function is defined. This will only be true for WordPress 4.4 and newer. If we have support we use the simple add_term_meta function to assign metadata to our term.

If we don't have support we grab the term object itself (by the passed in term ID) and from that we extract the $term_taxonomy data and use it to build our final key value. Since we are saving into the options table we need to ensure the key is unique, we do this by adding the taxonomy name, the term ID and finally the term key into one variable. We must ensure the key isn't greater than 64 characters long and if so trim it down. Once we've done all of this we can call our add_option function to save our value.

As you can see, this gets a bit long, but you do get added flexibility to support older and newer WordPress versions.

    Wrapping It All Up

Using these new meta functions should enable you to more easily extend your terms to provide unique functionality. For example, you might want to add a banner image to the top of your terms or provide metadata so you can conditionally display your terms differently (such as loading a new template file based on what term is being displayed).

With the flexibility and ease of the new term meta functions you can start implementing this in your new projects today!

Bureau of Automotive Repair Citation Milestone Announced by Automotive Defense Specialists on its Blog

Automotive Defense Specialists is a top California law firm specializing in Bureau of Automotive Repair defense cases. The firm maintains a lively blog for lay people on issues surrounding the regulatory environment in the California automotive repair industry.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 28, 2016

Automotive Defense Specialists, a California law firm of attorneys defending against Bureau of Automotive Repair actions, is proud to announce an important milestone on its blog: five blog posts specifically addressing the issue of Bureau of Automotive Repair citations. As the Bureau of Automotive Repair, or "BAR" as it is known in the industry, issues regulatory actions against station owners and/or technicians, a growing number receive official correspondence, which they may find confusing. Many owners turn first to the Internet upon receipt of correspondence from the BAR, including what is called a 'citation.'

"California's SMOG check system has grown more intensely complicated each year, especially the STAR program," explained attorney William Ferreira of Automotive Defense Specialists. "By publishing specific posts on specific issues such as citations from the Bureau of Automotive Repair we are eager to help educate the lay person. Interested parties are advised, of course, to reach out to an attorney for assistance as a blog post is no substitute for professional counsel if they have receive a citation from the BAR."

The blog posts have been conveniently organized via a WordPress 'tag' at http://automotivedefense.com/tag/bureau-of-automotive-repair-citation/. There, the interested reader can find all five of the major posts on the topic of a citation by the Bureau of Automotive Repair.

    Sample Post Summary: Two Examples

A sample post is entitled, "BAR 97 Citations – Simple Ideas about a Complex Problem with the Bureau of Automotive Repair", and can be found at http://automotivedefense.com/?p=1415. This post explains the issue of what are called 'Bar 97 Citations,' which occur vis-a-vis new regulatory requirements for inspecting certain model year vehicles in California. With the concept of 'citation' so confusing for the average person, Automotive Repair Specialists has an explanatory post at http://automotivedefense.com/2012/03/05/bureau-of-automotive-repair-star-program-and-citations/.

Bombshell: CDC destroyed vaccine documents, congressman reveals

(NaturalNews) "...the [CDC] co-authors scheduled a meeting to destroy documents related to the [MMR vaccine] study. The remaining four co-authors all met and brought a big garbage can into the meeting room and reviewed and went through all the hard copy documents that we had thought we should discard and put them in a huge garbage can." (William Thompson, CDC researcher) (Story by Jon Rappoport, republished from JonRappoport.WordPress.com).

On July 29, US Congressman Bill Posey made his last stand on the floor of the House.[1] Granted five minutes to speak, he laid bare the lying of the CDC in a now-famous 2004 study that exonerated the MMR vaccine and claimed it had no connection to autism.

"No connection to autism" was the lie.

Congressman Posey read a statement from long-time CDC researcher William Thompson,[2] one of the authors of the 2004 Pediatrics study[3] designed to determine, once and for all, whether the Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine could cause autism.

< p>Thompson saw and participated in violating the protocol of the study.[4] He was there. He helped his co-authors destroy documents that would have shown an MMR-autism link.

You can see a rush transcript of Congressman Posey's remarks here[5] (on the ageofautism.com website), which includes his reading of a statement from whistleblower Thompson.

Posey pleads with his colleagues for a Congressional investigation.

Of note: two of the CDC researchers on the infamous 2004 study, who according to Thompson, destroyed vital documents, are Coleen Boyle[6] and Frank DeStefano.[7] They are both high-ranking executives at the CDC in the area of vaccine safety.

This calls into question every single CDC study, under their tenure, that claims vaccines are safe.

CDC whistleblower Thompson's statement, which Posey read on the House floor, includes this bombshell:

"However, because I [Thompson] assumed it [destroying the documents] was illegal and would violate bo th FOIA and DOJ requests, I kept hard copies of all documents in my office and I retained all associated computer files. I believe we intentionally withheld controversial findings from the final draft of the Pediatrics paper."

Thompson has the smoking-gun documents. So does Congressman Posey. I believe others do as well.

So: publish them. Publish them now.

There are lawsuits to be filed.[8] Eleven years have passed since the CDC committed its crime of concealing the MMR vaccine-autism connection. How many parents, never informed of the truth, have permitted their children to receive this vaccine? How many children have been struck down by the vaccine?

The lawsuits should be filed against the CDC and the individual authors of the 2004 study. Lawyers must depose every CDC employee who had knowledge of the crime.

And what about the fact that the MMR vaccine is one of the shots that has been mandated, by law, in California,[9] in other states, and in Austra lia?[10] Mandating neurological destruction of children is a crime that must be investigated and punished. If these states (and other countries) insist on keeping the MMR on their schedules, they are guilty parties.

Here, for background, are earlier articles I wrote about whistleblower Thompson,[11] starting when the story broke in the summer of 2014.

    power outside the matrix

Understand what we are dealing with here, in terms of public exposure: the author of a peer-reviewed and published study; the author who has worked for many years at the CDC; the author who participated in destruction of vital documents; the author has come forward and admitted his crime and the crime of his colleagues. This kind of confession never happens.

    But it did happen.

And this story and what it means must not die, no matter how major media outlets try to spin it or ignore it.

Parents who are, in ignorance, allowing their children to receive the MMR vaccine, must be i nformed. They must know what is going on.[12] They must know the danger to their children.

Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Germany, France, India, China, South Africa...wherever the MMR vaccine is given...parents must be made aware they're gambling with their children's lives.

Government officials anywhere in the world[13] who make this continuing crime possible are liable.

So are manufacturers of the MMR.

    Get busy. Expose the truth.

Security Sense: You’re Responsible for the Third Party Services and Code You Use

Increasingly, software on the web is becoming a mashup of individual services all coupled together to provide one unified experience when someone visits a site. This site, for example, uses a variety of third party services including Google Analytics and AdSense, both of which load content from another provider then render it in your browser (assuming you're not blocking them, that is). My own blog pulls in Disqus for comments plus a whole bunch of various JavaScript and CSS libraries from CDNs.

All of that is just on the client side, that is it's content loaded directly into the browser. The dependencies of modern websites extend far further than that on the server, often embedding various third party libraries that connect to other services, process user input and render content to the response. All of these classes of dependency have had serious security risks in the past and here's the really tricky thing: if you run the site using them, you're responsible for them when they go wrong!

I was prompted to write this after some recent "enthusiastic" debate in a closed forum where an organisation had found themselves to be the delivery channel for some nasty malware. However, it wasn't them that was distributing the malware, it was the ad network they'd chosen to use and the debate centred around the assertion that it wasn't fair the organisation in question copped the heat for it. If we were to have a purely technical argument and apportion blame to the source of the incident then they're quite right, however that's not how these incidents are perceived.

Think about it from the consumer's perspective: they go to a company's website and are served malware – who are they going to blame? Do they want to hear "well, we let an ad network run whatever code they liked in an iframe and they sold advertising to a malicious party and that's why all the files on your PC are now encrypted and you have to pay Bitcoin"? No, the consumer couldn't care less, all they care about is that they went to the company's website and now they've got nasties loose in their machine.

Same again for all the other classes of things that go wrong due to someone else's code running in a company's website. WordPress plugins are notorious for having had a litany of serious security incidents in the past but if someone's website gets SQL injected and all the data sucked out, it's still the site owner that will cop the blame. After all, it's the same end result as if they'd written the bad code themselves and the customers who've lost data will still blame them in the same way.

It's not an easy problem to solve, I've had XSS on my blog in the past due to the nature of how ad networks operate. But make no mistake about it, I'm accountable for that! Likewise, if my site is one day the channel through which Cryptolocker is delivered to unsuspecting victors then I'll be the one apologising and will not simply be able to say "Hey, not my fault". Just in case there's any doubt as to how many dependencies we have on external code these days, try running Wappalyzer in Firefox and see just how much external content is pulled into the site (you can see an image of it for this website alongside this article).

I'll leave you with a final thought: if you're responsible for a website, how many external dependencies does it have? How much of other people's code is in there? How dependent is it on the practices of a third party such as an ad network? And perhaps most importantly, how do you ensure your customers aren't going to be compromised by vulnerabilities in areas you may have never even thought of?
