Baton: A Free WordPress Business Theme with a Homepage Layout Builder in the Customizer

Baton is a modern business theme that offers a unique approach to building the homepage. The theme features a clean top menu with elegant drop downs, a submenu, customizable heros, and multiple layouts for feature sections. While many business themes offer similar design features, Baton's differentiating factor is that users can live edit any of these sections with the help of the Note plugin.

baton-screenshot

After installing the theme users are prompted to install the Note plugin, a text widget that offers live editing in the customizer. This plugin is key to unlocking all of Baton's homepage layout building features. The widget includes a dropdown for selecting a pre-styled display layout. These include columned text blocks, text with media floated right or left, two different hero sections, and a features/services style section. In the example below, the sliders allow users to configure the number of columns and rows with live updates in the preview pane.

baton-edit-features

The hero section makes it easy to upload a background image. Headers, text, and buttons can also be live edited, styled, and positioned on the homepage. The entire page is widgetized for easy customization.

baton-hero

All of Baton's design options can be found in the Customizer, including the following:

  • Site layout width
  • Show/hide tagline
  • Background color and image
  • 3 menus locations: primary, secondary, and footer
  • 4 color schemes
  • 4 content layout options for home, single post, page, archive, taxonomy archives, and 404 pages
  • Check out a live demo of the theme to see all the different types of feature blocks in place.

After taking Baton for a test drive, I found that it has a multitude of customization options, but its features are not easily discoverable. For example, something as simple as creating a button is virtually impossible without watching the setup video or reading the documentation.

Fortunately, Baton includes an About page inside the admin where users can find more information and a link to tutorials. A few useful tips about editing the homepage using the Note widget would be helpful here. Despite the customization options not being very intuitive, the theme is already active on more than 700 WordPress sites after just a few months on WordPress.org.

If you are fairly savvy with the Customizer and you want more control over your homepage layout, Baton might be a good starting place for your next business website. You can download it for free from WordPress.org or install it in the admin using the themes browser.

Homeowner mistakenly shot by Indianapolis police to speak about incident

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The homeowner who was shot by police in a case of mistaken identity will speak about the incident in a press conference today.

Carl Williams, 48, was shot by police Tuesday morning in a case of "mistaken identity."

The incident started when the homeowner's wife reported that a man confronted her at their home in the 3600 block of Foxtail Drive, pointed a gun at her head and demanded her car keys.

The woman complied and gave up her keys. She then ran into her house to tell her husband what happened and to notify police.

During a media briefing about the incident on Tuesday, officers played two recordings, one of the 911 call that preceded the shooting and one of the conversation between dispatch and the officer at the scene. Those recordings are below:

    https://tribwttv.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/1-police-action-3636-foxtail-dr-im25-08-23-16.mp3 https://tribwttv.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/conversation_between_officers_and_dispatch.mp3

In the 911 call, Williams can be heard comforting his wife who sounded very distraught. Williams also gives dispatch a description of the suspect. He said the suspect was a black male with a rifle or long gun, wearing a dark colored baseball cap, and a red and white jacket.  At the end of the call, the man can be heard saying, "Oh wait, is that him? Is that him?"

At that point, 9-year veteran Officer Christopher Mills drove up to the house with his lights off to conceal his vehicle, which police say is common protocol. Police say the officer then saw a vehicle in the home's driveway which matched the description of the vehicle that was reported stolen.

When the officer went to check the vehicle's plates to see if it belonged to the home, police believe the homeowner came outside with a gun. The officer thought the homeowner was the robbery suspect, and he shot him in the stomach.

IMPD is calling the incident very tragic and a case of mistaken identity.

Police want to emphasize they are still searching for the carjacking suspect.

Features of WordPress You Did not know

There are some lesser known features of WordPress you might not have heard of before.  These features that I'm going to touch on,  can help enable you to become better at WordPress

    1. Screen Options

    WP Screen Options

Screen Options can extend the functionality of certain admin pages. Within the admin section, scroll all the way to the upper right-hand corner and you'll find Screen Options just below the "Howdy 'your name'" message.

    howdy your name

Using Screen Options gives you the ability to toggle on and off different features of specific admin pages, including pages, posts, comments, widgets, menu, plugins, and more. Depending on plugins and theme option you will have more or less options than on my site. 2. Help

Located right next to screen options, you can use Help before googling the question at hand. Depending on which admin page you're on, the help guidelines will differ. For instance, if you're on the post editor page, help options will look as follows:

    WP Help

The help function is a great way to learn some things you weren't familiar with before, or that wouldn't be as easy to find elsewhere. 3. Post & Page Options

You might have overlooked Post Options and Page Options, which are found in the right panel of the post editor or page editor.

Here are some specific functions you should be aware of:

  • You can use Visibility to make your posts public or only available to a specific audience (they'll need a password to access it).
  • Making a post Sticky will enable it to show up first, even after new blog posts are created.
  • You can also change the Publication Date of a post. Changing the publication of a blog post will change its order.
  • If you happen to need to go back to an older version of the post (say your internet loses connection or you lose your work), use Revisions. Every time you save a draft, a revision will be made.
  • 4. Quick Edit

While Quick Edit doesn't necessarily let you edit the copy of a post, you can make changes to certain aspects, including Title, Slug, Date, Author, Categories, and so on.

    wordpress quick edit

Using Quick Edit along with customized Screen Options will allow you to make mass edits to posts quicker.

    5. Using the Options Panel … Be Careful

You can access the options panel by going to http://yoursite.com/wp-admin/options.php. But do take caution! Making changes here can cause issues to your site, so you need to know what you doing.

    wp options

    6. Favoring Plugins

When you are logged into your WordPress.org account, you can in the plugin section favorite a plugin. This is useful as you're researching plugins to install, but don't necessarily want to install them yet (to many plugins installed on your site is never a good idea – it causes site bloat and potential security vulnerabilities).

    WP favorite plugin

If you see a plugin you might want to install, favorite it. That way you can do your research and install it later on if you do decide you want it installed. After you favorite a plugin, it'll be added to your Favorites list with the Plugin admin page, as well as the Plugin Directory.

Google Domain to current wordpress blog

Yes. It would be the same if you had purchased through WordPress.com.

Domains are no longer available for purchase or mapping individually. They are included with any of the WordPress.com plans. This change has been made as we work to offer the best combination of value and performance for users while still offering a completely free product for those who do not wish to purchase any upgrades.

A great way to go if you are not interested in WordPress.com Premium is to look into setting up a self-hosted WordPress.org site through a hosting provider such as Bluehost, GoDaddy, or Pressable.

How To Start A Blog – In Less Than 5 Minutes

How to start a blog or website in 5 minutes with WordPress.

    start a blog

After publishing the post on how I started blogging full-time, I've been receiving a ton of comments and emails, all asking the same question:

How do you start a blog & make money blogging?

Luckily, setting up a blog is really easy, even if you know absolutely nothing about computers or how to set up a website. I'll walk through how to start a blog here, step-by-step, and please feel free to leave a comment if you run into any issues or have any questions at all. I'll try to answer as quickly as possible!

How much money can you make from a blog?

I know some bloggers who are making over a million dollars a year, just from blogging! Even some food bloggers are making $500,000 dollars a year or more from their blogs. While I don't make anywhere near this amount, I also don't do any amazon affiliate advertising or have in-photo ads, subscriptions, or popup ads on my site. I consider the money an added bonus to something I love and was doing even before I knew you could earn a living from it.

If you want to earn money by blogging, I'd recommend signing up for a self-hosted WordPress blog. I made the mistake of starting on a different platform and ended up having to switch over to WordPress because it offers you so many more opportunities. For hosting, Bluehost is the only hosting service officially recommended by WordPress, and it's what I used when I started my own WordPress blog.

STEP ONE: Set Up Your WordPress Hosting

Click here to start, then you'll see a green button that says "get started now." Click that button.

Select your plan – For most beginners, the basic plan is fine. Click the green "select" button on the basic plan.

STEP TWO: Choose A Blog Name (the fun part!)

Think up any name you want, and see if it's available. Once you're happy with a new blog name, fill out the form on the "create your account" page and choose the plan you want. I'd recommend going with the 36-month plan because it's the best value, and you can also get a refund at any time if you change your mind about blogging. So really, there is no risk!

You can uncheck all the extras – although you might want to keep the privacy box checked. The package includes both your hosting (which you need if you want to run ads on your site and make money) and your first year domain registration for FREE!

(This saves you $18, which is what it normally costs to register a WordPress domain.)

how to start a blog wordpress

STEP THREE: Set Up WordPress To Get Started Blogging

Look in your inbox for a welcome email from Bluehost, and click the link in that email to go to your cPanel. Find the section in the cPanel called "MOJO Marketplace" and choose "One-Click Installs."

All you have to do here is click the WordPress icon, then click the green "Start" button.

Choose your blog domain, and click "Check Domain," then show advanced options and set up your own username and password. Make sure that the "Automatically create a new database for this installation" box is checked. Click to install.

    Your New WordPress Blog:

Once everything is set up, you can log in to your new WordPress site by going to the admin login URL and entering the username and password you set up in step three. This takes you to the WordPress dashboard, where you can create new posts, respond to reader comments, and play around with the appearance of your site, making it your own.

If you run into any questions while setting up your new blog, do not hesitate to ask, and I'll try to respond as quickly as possible Smile

Five Reasons I Stop Reading Your Blog Post

    blog-1027861_640

    by Allison Maruska

I read a lot of blog posts over the course of a week. A lot. And most of them don't come from my WordPress Reader, where the blogs I've subscribed to are listed. I find most of them on Twitter blog share days, where bloggers can share their interesting content with specified hashtags, expanding potential readership.

We all know getting the potential reader to click the post is job one – we do this with an interesting title, pictures, and the text blurb. Job two is keeping them there. So for the love of all things holy, if you are a blogger, please don't do things unrelated to your content that make me close your window. I want to read your interesting insights, and I'm sure I'm not alone. If I enjoy the content and there's nothing there that hurts my brain, I'll likely subscribe to your blog.

After all this blog reading, I've boiled down my gripes into an easy-to-digest list of five reasons I quit reading a post. Maybe I'm a lazy blog reader – hey, that's likely, in fact – but so are most other people. If you give them a reason to bail, they'll bail.

    Reason 1: Wonky color schemes

This gets first mention because it made me close a blog post window five minutes before I decided to write this post. In this case, it was white text on a black background, which might not seem so bad, but my eyes hate it. I could feel them straining two paragraphs in.

And while I suspected I'd enjoy the content being delivered in the post, I just couldn't do it. Reading something interesting isn't worth a literal headache. Other color schemes I've seen involve orange backgrounds, yellow text (I know), and other variations of visual pain.

Best to stick with black text on a white background. The most impactful things in your post should be your words, not the colors.

    Reason 2: Not mobile friendly

Like the majority of blog readers, I do most of my blog reading on my phone. If a post isn't mobile friendly, meaning it has a special "version" for mobile devices, the text appears in about 0.6 pt. So if I want to read the content, I have to zoom and slide the screen around, which I'm unlikely to stick with for long. Creating more work for the potential reader is almost a guaranteed way to lose the reader.

WordPress has many templates that are already mobile friendly. If yours isn't, or if you're using a different platform, Google how to adjust that setting. No griping about how easy kids these days have it allowed.

Reason 3: Huge blocks of text

As I searched for an image to go with this point, I found this post from The Onion. I pretty much don't need to say anything else about the point now.

"It demands so much of my time and concentration . . . This large block of text, it expects me to figure everything out on my own, and I hate it."

Like you've told your paranoid Uncle Buster on Facebook a million times (no, that woman didn't really die from applying too much hand lotion), The Onion is satire, but it sometimes makes a good point at the same time. As it does in this case. Posts with breaks are easier to digest.

    Reason 4: Ads all over

There's nothing wrong with allowing an ad company to post on your site to bring in a little cash. Hey, I like money, too!

    But…

Sometimes I come across a post where the content is severely boxed in by ads, especially on my phone. And I can't always close the ads, or worse, I end up clicking on them when I try to close them. That guarantees I won't read the post. I'm not gonna try to jump through that hoop more than once.

Reason 5: A popup box I have to close before reading

I'll be honest: I'm talking about newsletter signup boxes with this one. Especially if I came to a new blog via a blog share day, if I have to break through barriers to even start reading, I won't stick around.

There's nothing wrong with having a newsletter signup box, but make the popup happen much farther into the post (I've heard 75% is a good target). Do that, and readers like me are way more likely to A. Finish the post, and B. Sign up for your newsletter.
