If you run a small or local business, there is a good chance that your site is built in WordPress.
In fact, statistics from BuiltWith.com would indicate that WordPress powers about 50 percent of the entire internet. The exact numbers vary, with other statistics showing WordPress powering 22 percent of new active sites or 58.9 percent of sites where CMS is known.
Whatever way you look at it, that's a lot of WordPress websites.
WordPress is not just used for the likes of food blogs and local businesses, though — brands and huge websites use the platform.
Further stats from BuiltWith.com indicate that 40 percent of the top 100,000 websites use WordPress, and this number jumps to 50 percent when we look at the top million sites. Businesses like TechCrunch, The New Yorker, BBC America, and even the official Star Wars Blog use WordPress.
There is good reason for this. WordPress is a truly flexible platform. Myriad plugins allow for easy extension of functionality, and a world of themes allows for easy visual customization to suit the style of your business.
Most importantly, WordPress is easy to use. Several years ago, I was a big proponent of Joomla and Drupal, and we used those CMSs for most website design/development projects at Bowler Hat. However, we saw a lot of resistance to these platforms from our clients. People just could not get along with the way these systems worked, and this led to websites being ignored.
WordPress, however, presented a far shorter learning curve and much less customer support (lightbulb moment). Usability is crucial here. If you are not comfortable within your website CMS, then you simply won't use it. A site that is left untouched can soon become a weakness rather than the strong digital salesperson it should be.
Better yet, WordPress is a solid SEO platform right off the shelf. It just does so much right. And with WordPress powering so much of the Web, you could say the onus is on Google to ensure their search engine can crawl and index content in WordPress sites.

Onename Co-Founder: Bitcoin’s Model is Far From Broken
Following the controversial exit of former Bitcoin Core developer Mike Hearn, technology veterans and experts including Automattic (wordpress) founder and CEO Matthew Mullenweg and tech savvy bitcoin investor Fred Wilson have stated that they expect to see a new set of core developers and governance replacing Bitcoin Core.
"I personally believe we will see a fork accepted by the mining community at some point this year. And that will come with a new set of core developers and some governance about how decisions are made," Wilson wrote on January 15, 2016.
The concern from the bitcoin community regarding the block size debate and Mike Hearn's statement derives from the fear of reaching maximum bandwidth limits, seeing a surge in miners' fees and achieving the block size limit in the bitcoin network.
However, Onename co-founder Muneed Ali presented a counter argument, claiming that the Onename platform, which enables users to register a blockchain ID that can be embedded into various accounts and applications, did not experience any network conflict or delay in sending blockchain ID transactions over the past week.
"We, at Onename, were sending 50–100 blockchain ID transactions per block last week (~9,000 total) and didn't hit bandwidth limits or spike fees," said Ali.
Ali further emphasized that many of the community's bitcoin enthusiasts, experts, and startups are needlessly requesting for a hard fork which could potentially expose security and reliability issues of the network.
More importantly, average block size, according to the data provided by blockchain.info is currently less than 0.6 megabytes. Thus, a hard fork to dangerously increase the bitcoin blocksize to 4 megabytes or even 8 megabytes is definitely inessential.
"Reckless increase in blocksize can expose security and reliability issues or disconnect nodes with slower connections. Increasing bandwidth without proper testing and data collection from real networks risks security and reliability which is a bad tradeoff to make," said Ali.
Moreover, a proportional level of computing power is required to secure blocks in the bitcoin blockchain. Previously explained by bitcoin expert Pete Dushenski, a bigger block size requires a substantially higher level of computing power, which the bitcoin network isn't ready for just yet.
Over the past few months, a growing number of individuals in the bitcoin community have also proposed the replacement of Bitcoin Core, seeking for alternative developers in the conventional tech scene to replace veteran developers like Gavin Andressen. However, Ali strongly disagreed to these requests, explaining that operating as a Bitcoin Core developer requires a certain set of skills and expertise which take years of learning.
"Currently there are only a handful of people who can carry on the development of Bitcoin. Introducing new core developers requires highly skilled engineers to first get interested in Bitcoin and then invest significant time to gain experience and catch up to the knowledge pool. You can rearrange the hierarchy of current Bitcoin Core developers a little bit, but you cannot expect a completely new team to take over anytime soon," he said.
While the mainstream media is still convinced that bitcoin as a technology "has failed," bitcoin experts and developers state that Bitcoin's model is far from broken.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Masrur Barzani, son of Iraqi Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, may fill his father's role someday, even though he is a criminal in nations like Austria where he has been charged with Murder.
Human rights organizations say the spy agency he runs is ruthless and known for things like torture and suppressing journalists.
A 2008 article from the blog MusingsonIraq (http://musingsoniraq.blogspot.com/2008/08/son-of-kurdistan-president-goes-on.html) explains how the son of Kurdistan's President ended up in big trouble, "In August 2008 Masrur Barzani, son of Kurdistan regional President Masoud Barzani, went on trial in Austria for attempted murder.
In February, the younger Barzani was arrested along with five of his bodyguards in Vienna for shooting Kurdish opposition writer Dr. Kamal Sayid Qadir. Qadir was seriously injured in the incident.
He is an international law expert and professor in Austria, and a critic of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Kurdish officials originally denied that Masrur was even in the country, but he is now on trial for the attack."
The article states that after his release in December 2006, Dr. Qadir filed a lawsuit against Masrur Barzani and four other KDP officials in Austria.
"The suit charged them with kidnapping and torture. Qadir also continued to write critically about Kurdish rule. In a June 2007 piece for the Middle East Quarterly, he charged the Kurdish authorities of corruption, nepotism, torture, political assassinations, and other abuses. It's these actions that probably led to his shooting in Vienna in February 2008 by Masrur's men."
With regard to Kurdistan leader's illegal actions against its own citizens, Amnesty International (AI) wrote, "Since 2000, thousands of people have been detained arbitrarily and held without charge or trial in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in some cases for more than seven years.
"The vast majority were suspected members or supporters of local Islamist organizations, including both armed groups and legal political parties that do not use or advocate violence as part of their political platform. Some were tortured or otherwise ill-treated in detention."
AI reports that politically motivated arrests are carried out by members of the Parastin, the intelligence agency of the KDP. The Parastin is headed by Masrour Barzani, son of the KRG's President.
Their report explains that the Parastin are reported to have committed serious human rights abuses in the secret detention facilities that they run.
"They are also reported to have threatened journalists, writers and academics who have spoken out against alleged corruption within the KDP".
One story about Masrour Barzani that has mostly stayed off the radar, involves a failed relationship with a 19-year-old girl who was murdered in October 2012.
According to a source that requested not to be named, the girl, who was Lebanese, was raped and murdered by the son of Kurdistan's President after her family rejected his involvement with her.
Sources say that on the day of the girl's murder, Masoud Barzani took an unexpected trip to Italy's capital, Rome, where he was able to settle the matter and cover up another big scandal for his family.
