Maintaining Blog Traffic on Days You Don't Post

Maintaining Blog Traffic On Days You Don't Post

We all know that the highest traffic to your blog is when you publish a post. Makes sense. Now unless you are a full-time blogger (I'm envious of you) not all of us can post five days a week. So what do you do on the days that you don't blog? How do you maintain your traffic?

I typically post three times a week -- Mondays, Wednesday, and Friday -- and on the days that I don't post I maintain my traffic in a variety of ways.

Read other blogs!

The best way to do this is by following other blogs on Bloglovin'. It will aggregate all their RSS feeds into one easy to find way. Or in less techy talk, it will post excerpts of all the new posts as they come out. It's a great way to follow along with other bloggers. Of course, don't forget to comment on blogs. Often times, many bloggers who receive comments will go to your blog and comment on one of your posts, like Kathy from More Coffee, Less Talky.

Take some time to clean up your blog or social media accounts

For example, I've been revamping all my Pinterest boards to make them more cohesive, eliminate any redundancies, and delete old pins. On my to-do list is go through my old blog posts and add new images. All of mine were sized on blogger and look tiny on my lovely new Wordpress site.

[Tweet "On days you don't blog, how do you maintain your blog? "]

Promote, promote, promote!

Get on your social media and promote your blog posts. I typically start with Facebook and promote myself through a a few of my favorite Facebook groups, Blog Passion Project and Show Your Blog Love. These two are my favorite and I use them the most. If you have any others that you love, share them in the comments!

Use Stumbleupon. If you aren't stumbling your blog pages, you're missing out! Jaelan from Making Mrs. M has a great explanation of what it is and why you need to be using it. Even though my bounce rates are a bit higher now that I use it, my pageviews are definitely blossoming because of StumbleUpon. In addition to stumbling your own pages, you need to be stumbling others. Follow other Stumblers and like their pages. My stumble account is here, and if you follow me, I'll add you to the list of bloggers that I frequently stumble.

Organically interact on your other social media platforms. What I mean by this is instead of just sharing posts with blurbs, write something different. Pose a question to your readers, tell a joke, share a picture (not blog related), etc. For example:

capture

Instead of just sharing my sponsors posts or promoting my own posts, I posted a picture of these awesome cheese cart that was at a restaurant I stopped into. That way your followers won't just see your blog promotions but will feel like they can really connect with you (not just your blog) via social media.

Lastly, Take a breather!

Your blog will be okay for a day and come back to your blog feeling refreshed and ready to go!

How frequently do you post? On days you don't post do you have any tactics to promote your blog?

Automattic - An IPO Candidate in 2016?

As of January 2016, an estimated 25% of websites use the WordPress platform. The ubiquitous content management tool is the work of Matthew Mullenweg, who set out in 2003 to democratize the Web by using open-source software to give anyone with a computer the capacity to publish their thoughts on their own website. In 2005, Automattic Inc. became the corporate face of WordPress, and it is currently valued at around $1.2 billion. After 10 years of steady growth as the market leader, the question is whether 2016 will be the year of Automattic's long-awaited initial public offering (IPO).

About Automattic

WordPress has become one of the biggest content management platforms on the Web by offering one of the easiest and most secure ways to publish a website. It powers more than a quarter of the world's websites and is second only to Google in the number of monthly unique visits in the United States. Its closest competitor is Joomla, which has less than 3% market share. In addition to serving the publishing needs of individuals, Automattic offers an enterprise version of WordPress that allows clients to run custom code. The New York Times has been a longtime user of the WordPress platform.

Although the WordPress platform is free for individual users, Automattic offers several tools and services that generate substantial revenues, such as premium subscriber services, platform add-ons and ads placed on user sites. It also generates revenue from its enterprise version. Although Automattic doesn't release its financial information to the public, its revenues are estimated to be around $50 million annually, and the company is profitable.

Automattic's goals are ambitious, aiming to capture more than 50% of the global market. It expects that its move into mobile applications will solidify its position as the market leader and spur its growth toward its goal.

The Case for an Automattic IPO in 2016

By any measure, Automattic is a good candidate for an IPO in 2016. It has secure revenue growth. It is already profitable. It has dominant market share. After its founders turned down a $200 million offer in 2007, industry analysts have thought that Automattic is still an acquisition target. With a valuation of more than $1 billion, the company is more than able to stand on its own. Over the last few years, Automattic has raised more than $300 million, with its most recent round of $160 million in 2014. In similar situations, venture capitalists have been known to become anxious to find an exit; for Automattic, the most likely exit would be an IPO.

The Case Against an Automattic IPO in 2016

What investors have come to learn about Automattic is that nothing is automatic about the company's future. Where most analysts see large, late-stage rounds of financing as a next step toward an IPO, Automattic's chief executive officer (CEO) and founder, Mullenweg, sees it as an opportunity to remain private as it continues to pursue its growth targets. He has indicated that the last round of financing solidifies Automattic as an independent company and that his investors aren't looking for a quick turnaround. Mullenweg wants to get to over 50% market share and secure WordPress's dominance as a mobile publishing platform, which he sees as the future of content management technology.

Conclusion

Although most of the pieces are in place for a successful IPO, all indications are that Mullenweg is in no hurry to seek out public capital. Having turned down $200 million more than eight years ago, you can probably take him at his word. Chances of an Automattic IPO in 2016 are slim.

Pioneer Press has a brand-new site

Screen Shot 2016-01-26 at 4.47.20 PMIf you haven't visited the Pioneer Press website in a while — perhaps out of frustration with its glitchiness, glaring incompatibility with mobile devices, and so on — you might want to take another look.

A new TwinCities.com debuts today, as Pioneer Press digital czar Jennifer Westpfahl notes.

I am excited about the new site for a geeky reason: It is based on WordPress, the same Internet-publishing platform that powers my personal blog and my Pioneer Press tech blog (where you are now) along with, it is estimated, 23.3 percent of the top 10 million websites as of January 2015.

For Pioneer Press customers, this means a site that operates more reliably than the old one, and adapts itself more elegantly to computer and mobile-devices displays of varying sizes. Yes, you can actually use the site on an iPad now; what a concept.

For Pioneer Press newsroom staffers like myself, this is exciting because we can discard our crappy old content-management system, and start using a CMS that doesn't suck for our writing, copy editing and photo/video posting.

Everything becomes easier, like hyperlinking. Can you believe our old CMS did not have native hyperlinking? I had to code in Kompozer.

The Pioneer Press is, specifically, using a flavor of WordPress called WordPress.com VIP, a souped-up variant intended to be a full publishing platform for some of the biggest names in the mainstream media.

Now we're on that list (along with, eventually, other Digital First Media papers). That is just wicked cool.
