10 tips to create successful WordPress themes

It starts with a great design

The purpose of a WordPress theme is to display your content in a pleasant way for your readers. So obviously, a great theme starts with a great, clean and usable design.

Decide your theme purpose – will it be a magazine theme, a blogging theme, or an online shop? Once you have made up your mind, check out what popular theme vendors like ElegantThemes or Themeforest have in stock, and take also a look at what kind of themes popular blogs and sites are using.

Don't reinvent the wheel

WordPress is an open source software distributed under the terms of the GPL license. It ensures that users can freely re-use and adapt any part of the software. Most WordPress themes are distributed under the same GPL license (which is the right thing to do) so you can totally take parts of an existing theme and use it in your own project.

Although most themes aren't made for being used as a starting point for a new project, some are developed with that purpose in mind. My favorite starter themes are underscores.me, Bootstrap Basic and UnderStrap (which I've used to create the current CatsWhoCode.com theme)

Code according to WordPress standards

Like most softwares, WordPress has its own coding standards. Why? Because hundreds of developers are working on the project, so standards ensure code readability. Using the correct coding standards when creating a theme intended for public distribution is definitely a good thing since it will make customization easier for users.

Stay updated

When coding your theme, always make sure that your code is up to date with the current release of WordPress. Check for PHP deprecated functions, have a look at the Codex for deprecated WordPress functions, and make use of the latest WP improvements.

Less is more

In recent years, most commercial themes are released with tons of features, most of them being useless to 90% of users.

Feel free to provide quality features, but don't bloat your theme with too many options that will end up slowing down the theme for little or no use.

Ensure compatibility with popular plugins

WordPress is made to be extended by the use of plugins, some of which are very popular among users.

Making sure that your theme is compatible with the most loved plugins (Woocommerce, WPML…) will definitely increase its success.

Make your theme translation ready

As the most popular CMS, WordPress is translated into over 50 languages. But in order to be compatible with translations, you have to take care of a few things.

Get ready to support users

If you plan to release your theme commercially, user support is something you need to keep in mind. Many users aren't familiar with WordPress themes or would need customization services. This can represent a tremendous amount of time, but it's also how most theme vendors are making big money.

Releasing your theme for free? Then don't hesitate to provide it "as is", as most free WordPress themes are.

Quality check

Your theme is probably good right now, but what about striving for perfection? Make sure your theme is speed-optimized to ensure fast loading, and responsive for correct display on mobile devices.

Once done, check your code for valid HTML5 and CSS. To do so, the good old W3C Validator is the best tool.

Make a great demo site

Done with coding? Checked your theme speed? Your code is valid? Awesome! Now, what you need to do is to create a demo site that will allow users to see your theme in use. Build a great demo and install it on a quality server like WP Engine, Hostgator, Vidahost or KickAssd.

If you have carefully followed each step of this guide, I have no doubt that your theme will be a success, whether you release it for free or commercially.

My reply to Micro.blog Project Surges Past $65K on Kickstarter, Gains Backing from DreamHost | WordPress Tavern

I love that Micro.blog is doing so well on Kickstarter! I'm even more impressed that DreamHost is backing this and doubling down in this area.

I coincidentally happened to have a great conversation yesterday with Jonathan LaCour before I saw the article and we spoke about what DreamHost is doing in the realm of IndieWeb and WordPress. I love their approach and can't wait to see what comes out of their work and infectious enthusiasm.

I'm really surprised that WordPress hasn't more aggressively taken up technologies like Webmention, which is now a W3C recommendation, or micropub and put them directly into core. For the un-initiated, Webmention works much like @mention on Twitter, Medium, Facebook, and others, but is platform independent, which means you can use it to ping any website on the internet that supports it. Imagine if you could reply to someone on Twitter from your WordPress site? Or if you could use Facebook to reply to a post on Medium? (And I mean directly and immediately in the type @mention/hit publish sense, not doing any laborious cut and paste from one platform to another nonsense that one is forced to do now because all the social silos/walled gardens don't inter-operate nicely, if at all.) Webmention can make all that a reality.  Micropub is a platform independent spec that allows one to write standalone web or mobile apps to create publishing interfaces to publish almost any type of content to any platform–think about the hundreds of apps that could publish to Twitter in its early days, now imagine expanding that to being able to use those to publish to any platform anywhere?

While Twitter has been floundering for a while, WordPress has the structure, ecosystem, and a huge community to completely eat Twitter's (and even Facebook/ Instagram's, Medium's, & etc.) lunch not only in the microblog space, but the larger space which includes blogging, photos, music, video, audio, and social media in general. The one piece they're missing is a best-in-class integrated feed reader, which, to be honest, is the centerpiece of both Twitter and Facebook's services. They seem to be 98% readers and 2% dead-simple posting interface while WordPress is 98% posting interface (both more sophisticated/flexible and more complicated), and nearly non-existent (and unbundled) reader.

WordPress has already got one of the best and most ubiquitous publishing platforms out there (25+% of the web at last count). Slimming down their interface a tad to make it dead simple for my mom to post, or delegating this to UX/UI developers with micropub the way that Twitter allowed in the early days with their open API and the proliferation of apps and interfaces to post to twitter, in addition to Webmentions could create a sea-change in the social space. Quill is a good, yet simple example of an alternate posting interface which I use for posting to WordPress. Another is actually Instagram itself, which I use in conjunction with OwnYourGram which has micropub baked in for posting photos to my site with Instagram's best-in-class mobile interface. Imagine just a handful of simple mobile apps that could be customized for dead-simple, straightforward publishing to one's WordPress site for specific post types or content types…

With extant WordPress plugins, a lot of this is already here, it's just not evenly distributed yet, to borrow the sentiment from William Gibson.

For just a few dollars a year, everyday people could more easily truly own all their content and have greater control over their data and their privacy.

I will note that it has been interesting and exciting seeing the Drupal community stepping on the gas on the Webmention spec (in two different plugins) since the W3C gave it recommendation status earlier this month. This portends great things for the independent web.

I haven't been this excited about what the web can bring to the world in a long, long time.

Creation and Love, Not Resistance and Disruption – Part 2/2

Overall, I think we can afford to go about building Nova Earth, no matter how noisy and chaotic the world outside becomes. As Michael has said:

"While it may look messy and chaotic, the Mother has not backed away from her Plan and neither have we. It will be done, and it will be done timely. And when I say "timely", I do not mean the infamous "soon". What I mean, sweet angel, is within a very near framework in your time and ours." (1)

Team Light's efforts to build Nova Earth, a world that works for everyone, will eclipse Team Dark's efforts to reinstate the Third-Dimensional struggle for survival in which only the elite survives.

We lightworkers will erect the structures of a new world on the ashes of the old. Ours is to be the Phoenix that rises from its own ashes.

Of our role, Sanat explained: "We are not doing the implementation. You are. You are the fulfilment agents." (2)

We'll be engaged in creation and our efforts are said to be guaranteed success – if we serve the Light, if we steward the Mother's abundance, or if we step forward and assume the role of leadership in another area, which only knowledgeable lightworkers can do.

Here's Archangel Michael on the latter subject:

"If no [lightworker] steps forward into [leadership] then there is a massive vacuum because many of the billions upon your planet have not yet learned, adapted and integrated the new tools – the fullness of this new energy.

"So [when non-lightworkers] are assigned … or try to step up … to create and to take the leadership role, they do not have the training and insight to do it in a way that is achievable. … So there is a lack, a vacuum of leadership.

"Now, who, upon this wondrous planet, has been hiding in the shadows or edging out, or in the limelight and is ready? … Who has been diligent and practiced patience and fortitude and stamina, and anchored the divine qualities? Who is it that is prepared to do this? Well, it is the lightworkers." (3)

The second reason I won't be supporting disrupt and rebel is that I also know it's all about love.

Everything we're doing has the ultimate aim of opening us up more fully to the love that we already are and have obstacles in our way of seeing.

I feel so awkward saying this but, over an extended period of time, I've experienced a higher form of love – what Jesus called "real" love (4) and what I called "transformative" love. (5) It's  now obvious to me that love is everything. All we are is a (somewhat persistent) bubble on the wave, which ultimately returns to the wave.

The wave is love. The bubble is love. It's just that love has assumed a form for a time. Congealed some of itself  into forms just as toffee congeals but remains toffee.

Life could not be any other way than aimed at the fullest experience of love. Can you imagine climbing Jacob's Ladder of consciousness and finding heaven was a place of mammoth and all-conquering hatred?

No such thing is possible or God would not be producing so many saints and sages of gentle and compassionate mien, who've realized themselves and God.  The evidence is against heaven being anything but a place of love.

Speaking only for myself, I don't plan to abandon love, now that I've found it. Whether I'm in my home or on the street (in a march, demonstration, protest, etc.), the social action will have to serve love or I won't engage with it.

This is exactly the time to maintain the bar that the archangels have given us – the standards of integrity that we've received from them over the years.

I'd expect that the standards in the area of social action would be that it has to come from love and has to promote peace, equality, and harmony.

Sanat has told us that the folks on the other side of our co-creative partnership will be relying on us as the ground crew to hold the space for and create love and peace, Nova Being and Nova Earth.

We were told a time would come when the winds of chaos would blow. I say this is that time and we're the ones to hold the space of love and peace.
