The security firm has observed attackers targeting WordPress sites running version 4.2 and lower, and so far, researchers observed 2,600 unique WordPress websites being used in the operation, a Thursday post indicated.
Deepen Desai, director of security research with Zscaler, told SCMagazine.com in a Friday email correspondence that this appears to be an automated attack on WordPress sites.
"We haven't confirmed this yet, but it appears to be a combination of JetPack plugin (installed by default in those versions) Cross Site Scripting and CForms plugin 14.7 and an earlier arbitrary code execution vulnerability – CVE-2014-9473," Desai said.
The attackers are fully compromising the WordPress sites, meaning they add a webshell and steal credentials before injecting the iFrame that loads the Neutrino Exploit Kit landing page, the post said, adding that the code only targets Internet Explorer users.
Neutrino Exploit Kit has been observed targeting CVE-2015-5119, an Adobe Flash Player vulnerability in the ActionScript3 ByteArray class. The flaw was identified as a zero-day bug in the Hacking Team leak and was quickly added into a variety of exploit kits.
"Successful exploitation of a victim leads to an encrypted executable download," the post said. "The binary is decrypted and begins beaconing almost immediately. Looking at the traffic, we can immediately see this is CryptoWall 3.0. Sure enough, a couple minutes later we see the all too familiar 'HELP_DECRYPT' page and see connections out to the payment servers."

On Thursday Automatic Inc, which owns the world's most popular blogging software, and an Irish subsidiary Aut O'Mattic A8C Ireland Limited were ordered by High Court Judge Ms Justice Marie Baker to delete "blatantly untrue" remarks contained in a blog about the company and chief executive Brian O'Cathain and its financial chief Tom Hickey.
The company was also ordered to identify the author of blogger.
The orders were secured after barrister Bernadette Quigley for Petroceltic International headquartered in Dublin and its two executives, told the court the blogger concerned had threatened to post further allegations on the site.
Counsel said the allegations posted by the so-far unidentified blogger are entirely unsubstantiated and blatantly untrue.
On Friday morning the matter returned before the High Court.
Mr Justice John Hedigan was informed by Ms Quigley nothing had been done by the defendants since the orders were granted on Thursday. The material complained of had not been taken down counsel said.
Arising out of this failure to remove the material counsel asked the court to consider taking steps against the defendants including imposing a €100,000 a day fine until the court's orders were complied with.
That application was opposed by lawyers for the blogging service providers.
Barrister Ronan Lupton, for Aut O'Mattic A8C Ireland Limited and Automatic Inc, said there had been some initial confusion about the case. Originally the action was against the Irish subsidiary only which had nothing to do with the servers hosting the blog at the centre of the action.
It was later agreed by consent that the US parent company, Automatic Inc, could be joined to the action. Counsel said it was only yesterday afternoon when the American parent became a party.
Counsel said both Automatic and its lawyers are based in California, which some nine hours behind Ireland.
Mr Justice Hedigan said orders of the court must be obeyed no matter who they are made against. Non compliance of such orders he added is a serious matter.
Noting the application to impose fines the Judge said he was adjourning the matter to Monday's sitting of the High Court.
The Judge said he hoped that by then the orders granted by Ms Justice Baker would be complied with.

Later Judge Baker heard that the US parent company, Automatic Inc, could be joined by consent and it was against this company that the court made its orders.
Ms Quigley asked the court to grant an order restricting reporting of the case but Judge Baker refused. She said she did not think any responsible court reporter would make references to the user name or alleged defamatory material that had been posted on the net.
Mr Lupton said The Irish Times had 14 hours earlier published a story to the effect that his client, Aut O'Mattic A8C Ireland, the Irish unit of Wordpress's US owner Automatic, was being sued by Petroceltic.
Ms Quigley told the court that nothing had been disclosed to The Irish Times by her side.
Earlier she told the court that the blogger, whose remarks or username are not being reported, obviously had to pay to post the blog and therefore his or her identity had to be known to the owner of the site.
The proceedings were adjourned until September 8th.
