Wordpress goes all-in with Google's speedy pages project, enabling it for everyone

The answer was the Accelerated Mobile Page (AMP) project aiming to replicate the Facebook Instant Article feature on the open web.

The AMP framework does not affect searches in Microsoft Bing, Apple Safari, or other search engines. That's because more ads are pushed into our browsers and more sites use tackers; large GIFs could also have something to do with our slow mobile web.

In a blog post, Google says AMP web pages load on average four times faster than normal web pages, and sometimes up to 10 times faster.

AMP is an initiative to make fast loading mobile webpages. Whenever you use Google to search for a keyword using a mobile device now, webpages created using AMP will appear when relevant in the Top Stories section of the search results page.

In its current form, AMP is focused on accelerating news sites; this carousel is similar to what you've already seen for searches that prompted Google to show you a Twitter results carousel. It also indirectly parries one of the main threats facing digital ad companies - the growing use of ad-blocking software in response to slow, buggy and hard-to-use web pages - by stopping ads from slowing down access to articles.

In addition to Daily Mail, The New York Times, Huffington Post, New York Post, New York Daily News, Vox and The Wall Street Journal are using AMP to build their articles.

"No matter how many ads you put on the page the content comes first", said David Besbris, a Google vice president of engineering for search.

It seems Google Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOG) offices went into a frenzy when Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) made Instant Articles, available to everyone a few days ago. "Will Facebook give more priority in its News Feed to posts with Instant Articles, versus posts with a Google AMP link?"

Since there is a universe of websites on Google, there are chances that changes will be implemented gradually.

"We're going to launch a segment of our traffic as AMP - and a segment not - and continue to evaluate", Harris said. "If a user taps on something they will get the content immediately".
