Social Media Camp teaches more than marketing

April 30, 2016 by Mikayla Russell, contributing writer

Attention marketing, communication, and social-media fans: Social Media Camp is coming soon. Co-Producer Paul Holmes started doing events based around website software WordPress in 2008, and things have been going strong since.

"We ended up running those for five years," he says. "People were very interested in what was happening with WordPress."

The strong interest in this led to the idea of creating an event for social media, which had become the latest buzz in the industry.

"Very quickly, social media became the topic of interest," says Holmes. "One of our speakers came up to me after one of the events and said, 'This is crazy, how many people showed up; do you think we could do something like this for social media?' I said, 'Sure,' and the rest is history."

Social Media Camp's first event took place in 2010; Holmes says it attracted around 450 people and became Canada's biggest social media conference. And despite the event's name, Holmes says it has something for just about everyone.

"What makes us unique is that we aren't just a marketing conference," he says. "We capture the whole spectrum of social media, so we have stuff that's targeted towards politics, journalism… [things] that are topical, but it's not a marketing conference."

And with Victoria's booming tech sector, it makes the city the perfect location for this event.

"A lot of people don't realize that technology is our top industry, and a close second is tourism," says Holmes, "so everyone wants to come here, and we already have a technology base."

Holmes says social media has been the most disruptive of all technologies in the last few decades.

"It has cracked open every industry and every sector," he says. "There is nothing that isn't affected by social media. Because it's ever-changing, you have to be creative, you have to think outside the box, adapt."

The Curious Case of the WordPress Docker Container | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps

I have an article in the recently released "DZone Guide to Building and Deploying Applications on the Cloud" entitled "Fullstack Engineering in the Age of Hybrid Cloud". In this article I discuss the need and skills of a Fullstack Engineer with relation to troubleshooting and repairing complex, distributed hybrid cloud applications. My recent experiences with troubleshooting issues with my Docker WordPress container only reinforce the details I wrote about in this piece. Without my comprehensive understanding of both the infrastructure and application layer I don't believe I could have achieved resolution (if I have, but more on that later).

1969479-dz-cloud2016cover-lgMy Docker WordPress container has always had issues with the "Error Connecting to Database" issue, but initially it would happen once a month and I would just re-start the container. I had read that the issue was fixed by moving to WordPress 4.5, so I upgraded, which came with its own challenges given these containers are supposed to be immutable.

Unfortunately, I designed my container when Docker architecture was in its infancy and so separating out and linking a MySQL container and the WordPress container as well as storing data on a separate volume are all features which emerged, or became more easily used, in later versions. Eventually, I will need redesign around 1.11 features, but for now, I'm just trying to keep up what I currently have. I did try just moving the database files onto permanent storage mapped in to the container as a volume, but all I did was fight with file permissions for a day and MySQL never ended up starting.

Recently, it became more and more difficult to keep the container up, so I upgraded to the latest Ubuntu 14.04 kernel and when that didn't seem to help the issue I upgraded Docker from 1.4 to 1.11. None of these seemed to correct the issue. However, Docker 1.11 leverages the new architecture and uses cgroups, which resulted in cgroup out of memory thread killer posting messages to my console.

Screen Shot 2016-04-29 at 6.13.20 AM

Now, I could see that mysqld was being terminated at some point due to insufficient memory. To solve the memory issue, I tried optimizing the WordPress LAMP stack for low memory and even migrated from a 1G virtual machine to a 2G instance. It seems no matter how much memory I threw at this problem the longest the WordPress site would be active before the database connection issue appeared was an hour.

Totally baffled at this point, I started chasing down a lead regarding WordPress issues occurring on my cloud service provider. It seemed the issue I was seeing was happening to many others on Digital Ocean, perhaps this was a VPS (DO's Droplet architecture is VPS-based) issue and not a Docker issue. DO responded on its forum to the various postings stating that running out of memory is common result of the known XML-RPC Denial of Service attack.  XML-RPC is the API interface for WordPress.

Wait! What am I doing? No one's going to bother attacking my little old blog, it can't be that. Back to optimizing memory use. Oh crud, this is still not getting me anywhere after two weeks.

Unfortunately, again my immutable container architecture limited my ability to see logs and SSH connections were often terminated due to low memory as well. Once I terminated the container without committing the container the logs were lost. So, I had to modify the current container to use an external volume for all the log files and now wrote them out to permanent storage.

Whoa! What do I find in the apache2 access.log after the next time the issue occurs? Well, when I did a tail of the last 200 entries I found my site was being attacked by a Googlebot, and there were a lot more entries in addition to those. In the end, I was a victim of a denial of service attack.

I believe its important to look at what data I had available and the characteristics identified by the logs and error messages. Nothing screamed DoS attack consuming mass number of threads on the Apache server and driving memory usage to 0 so that the memory manager was sacrificing threads to keep the OS alive (does that make anyone else think of Kirk screaming to Scotty, "all power to life support"?). When the attack stopped, mysqld_safe restored the thread, but it seems the socket or some other interprocess mechanism didn't allow WordPress to communicate with the MySQL.

Piecing this together after the fact required a mix of skills. It might have been easier if I was doing live monitoring and tracking inbound requests while also constantly checking that WordPress could communicate MySQL, but realistically, this is a dramatic step when all else has failed.

Through this I learned a lot about container architecture, but this issue is probably still lingering. I'm just denying all requests to access XML-RPC from outside IP addresses at this time and the WordPress has been up for over 24 hours. More importantly, it really reinforces what I wrote about in the article and I don't believe I could have reached this point if I didn't have a good understanding of the infrastructure, operating system, networking, Docker and LAMP stack.

Blog in Malayalam exhorts state Muslims to join jihad

Kozhikode/Thiruvananthapuram: A suspected Islamic State-inspired blogger has issued death threat to the administrators of Freethinkers, a Facebook community engaged in discussions on religions and social issues. A post in the blog has the profile of 14 persons, including a Muslim teacher from Malappuram.

The highly provocative posts exhort Indian Muslims to follow the path of jihad as it is the only way to uphold the dignity of Indian Muslims. The content of the Malayalam blog, muhajir2015.wordpress.com, is not in tune with the stance of any known Muslim fundamentalist outfits in India including SIMI, the most radical outfit, among them.

It is dangerously close to the publicity material of the Islamic State. Without naming the IS, the blogger asks all Indian Muslims to migrate from the land of nonbelievers to the land of Islam. "Till now they (Indian Muslims) had an excuse that there was no Darul-Islam (home of Islam) or the Caliphate in the world. But such alibis are not acc eptable after the re-establishment of the Caliphate. It is the religious duty of all Muslims to migrate after the Darul Islam is established," the blogger says. It may be recalled that IS has invited Muslims all over the world to come and stay in the Caliphate it established.

The post says ideas like communism, democracy , secularism and nationalism are against Islam and claims that Prophet Muhammad has said that one day Muslim warriors will overpower India. It deplores while the world over has woken up to jihad, Indian Muslims are shying away from their duty .

The blogger particularly targets the Muslim teacher in Malappuram, who has been vociferous in criticizing Islamic fundamentalism. "If he continues to walk freely even after insulting the Prophet, it means that Allah has forsaken the community . Anyone who insults the messenger of Allah should be killed," the post says. TOI has contacted senior officials of intelligence, however, they are yet to take a serious look at the issue. State police chief T P Senkumar said the cops have to find out the content creators of the blog. HiTech cell assistant commissioner Vinayakumaran Nair said the police are waiting for a reply from the WordPress authorities. Nodal officer of Cyberdome, the hi-tech centre for cyber security , Manoj Abraham said such issues do not come under the preview of Cyberdome. Members of Freethinkers group, when contacted, refused to comment. Sources said that they have informed the police about the blog, but have no plans to register a formal complaint. Rationalist C Ravichandran said that the killings of rationalists in Bangladesh should be an eye-opener to the authorities in the state.

(ThyBlackMan.com) WordCamp conferences are more than talking about one of the best web development applications there is. The ability to build web content that represents the diversity of the human spirit and passions that we have creating a dynamic web presence that builds relationships and gives people a voice.

From traditional text blogs to integrating widgets, plug-ins, apps and a host of other multimedia elements. The diversity of WordPress is that the range of who is using it signifies that users, developers, programmers, coders, graphic designers all have an equal opportunity to create dynamic content.

The ability to express thoughts, dreams, feelings, passions, desires and share content has expanded the integration of web content in our daily lives. The implementation of web tools has opened the social flood gates of connecting people of the same interests and those of diversity of mind and culture. The importance of people of WmJacksoncolor and culture to learn how to use and implement web development can be seen more and more as people using their smart devices to get their news, communicate with family and friends and discover that they too are creators of content from their daily interactions.

The first WordCamp of Jacksonville 2016 provided key areas of interest from the value of building a Brand to Marketing that Brand, the importance of building relationships through networking and volunteering in the community. The importance of being a business owner.

New words are being birthed to show the roles people are playing when utilizing web based tools. Content Creator, Influencer, Developer, User, Media Agent, Thought Leader, Web based marketing expert, and the list is growing. This gives rise to the seriousness people are taking at the works they do online. Rarely will you see someone develop an egotistical mindset because the changes in technology will humble a person's skill-set and application. Learning is always continuous and transformative.

Communities are growing online, the more your involved in an area of content creation the deeper the understanding that the web is a collection of communities. These communities even though they are digital build relationships that sometimes are equal in emotional attachment to extended families, there is a connection, a bond from sharing passions and the delight in building a platform or a tool. The web has a unique ability to allow people and groups to create Brand Personalities that can expand globally.

Attached to the BP is the development of a persons e-Reputation that is just as important as their civic or community reputation. Building digital content does get noticed depending on the amount and frequency of posted content, marketing does accompany the building of a Brand, learning how to market yourself, your Brand and you passions are not exclusively to companies, it has extended to individuals using digital tools and platforms. Many that are using WordPress are finding that their reputations do proceed them because they are becoming involved in Meetups and other offline experiences that draw people together not just to talk about technology, but to support each other in life. The diversity of the faces, skin tones, language dialects, lifestyles, genders and people of color, culture and nationality are being united in a dynamic and global platform that enhances communication.

What I Learned from WordCamp Jacksonville #WCJAX

1. Build your Brand and build your voice because no one else will.

2. Your Brand builds a relationship with others and creates trust.

3. You have to own your Brand every day.

4. Your Brand should have a single Brand Personality.

5. Your content should be accessible on multiple formats and platforms that even those disabled can have access.

6. Your Brand is a personal picture of who you are and what you represent.

7. Your Brand develops your e-Reputation and e-Personality.

8. Your Brand should show that you are approachable

9. Your Brand should have digital tools attached that allow for disabled access.

10. Your Brand should show your passion for what you believe in.

11. Your Brand is your voice, never allow anyone else to speak for you or use your Brand.

12. Think about your Brand personality offline.

13. Allow your Brand to volunteer in causes that share your passions, vision and mission.

14. Your Brand should be on all your documentation online and offline.

15. Your Brand should show you to be confident not arrogant

16. In a business platform your Brand should stand out, and stand up.

17. Be humble in your works.

18. Professional Development is vital to stay up to date, so participating in conferences, seminars and workshops is a priority.

19. Network and Collaborate when possible.

20. Integrate, Implement and Initiating new technologies can sometimes be challenging. Don't be to proud or ashamed to ask for help.

21. There is never a conclusion to a project just a transition.

    The 25 Best WordPress Plug-ins

Quick question: Do you know what IFC, The New York Post, The Walt Disney Company, and WNBA have in common? Ponder the answer for a moment, as the tie that binds the four organizations isn't obvious. Go ahead, I've got a minute. Stumped? It's the WordPress content management system (CMS) that powers their websites.

If you aren't hip to WordPress, here's a short explanation of what it's about. WordPress is a flexible, easy-to-set-up Web publishing platform that has served as the foundation for more than 60 million websites since its launch more than a decade ago. Its popularity has spawned an incredibly rich plug-in ecosystem that gives users the ability to improve their sites in many ways, including search engine optimization (SEO), article enhancement, and comments management. In short, there are an amazing number of ways to trick out your WordPress installation's base functionality, whether you're hosting your own website or using a managed WordPress hosting service.

There are more than 43,000 WordPress plug-ins available as I write this piece. The upside? There are a ton of plug-ins to choose from. The downside? There are a ton of plug-ins to choose from. As with the Android and iOS app stores, the WordPress plug-in catalog houses countless goodies mixed in with even more duds. This guide's goal is to highlight those that will most benefit your website. You can, of course, visit WordPress' Most Popular Plug-in Directory to see the most downloaded plug-ins of the moment, but you'll miss many great potential additions by not digging deeper. That, however, is a potentially massive time sink, so I've done the digging on your behalf.

I've tested numerous WordPress plug-ins—both good and bad—to compile this list of the best that will help your site perform like a champ. And they do it without costing you a cent, because these plug-ins are all free (although some do offer premium levels with additional functionality). If you've explored this list before, you'll notice some changes this time around. I've updated the list to reflect some of my new, favorite WordPress plug-ins. I think you'll like them. I also removed the plug-ins that are no longer available, as well as the plug-ins that haven't been updated in more than a year. An out-of-date plug-in may work with your recently updated WordPress installation, but it's not guaranteed to do so.

Oh, one more thing. Now's the time I should mention that plug-ins can only be installed in self-hosted WordPress sites; if WordPress.com is your host, this article isn't for you.

If you're self-hosting and you're ready to enhance your WordPress-powered site, check out these excellent plug-ins. Got a favorite plug-in that I haven't mentioned? Feel free to shout it out in the comments section below.

    The Ultimate WordPress Development Environment

WordPress development has come a very long way in recent years when it comes to tooling. In the past, developing a WordPress website required some sort of MAMP/WAMP localhost setup and almost always, a rather painful headache. Maybe you're even one of those developers who developed their website on a live environment – I was.

Luckily, times have changed and there are now tools that help take the headache and repetitiveness out of building WordPress sites on your computer.

    WordPress Development

In December last year, after 3 years of being almost completely devoid of any WordPress development, I became a full time WordPress developer again. Before that 3 year stint in the payments industry, I was a full time WordPress contractor.

Being out of an industry for 3 years, gave me a unique perspective on how fast things change in computing and more specifically, web development. WordPress development is no exception.

You see, when I returned to WordPress development in December last year, I decided to look at setting up the perfect WordPress development environment. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the tooling around WordPress had advanced so much that it was much like trading in a Ford for a Ferrari.

I was excited, and still am of course, to explore all the tools and in today's article I'm going to share with you a summary of what I have learned. Hopefully it will help you tweak your current environment and implement some of the tools that are available to you.

    It Starts with the Server

To begin with, the most important piece in the WordPress development environment puzzle is the server. Without a server, we can't do anything.

There are so many different options available today to host WordPress websites on your local environment that it gets tricky to know which one to use.

I'm going to suggest that you drop MAMP/WAMP/XAMP and start using a virtualized development environment.

Why? There are so many reasons:

  • It's an isolated environment. By using a virtualized environment you're creating a development server that is isolated from your host operating system. You can install whatever operating system you like on the virtual machine and start/stop/restart it without affecting your host. It's easy to tear down once you're done with development and no longer need it.
  • Messed something up? No problem! Just rebuild the environment. I'm sure we've all been in the sticky situation where we've tinkered with our server settings and blew stuff up. This is easily fixed by rebuilding the virtual environment or simply using snapshots. So now you can play around and tweak your settings without fear of failure.
  • As close to live as you can get. You can literally replicate your live environment on your localhost if you wanted. Having these two environments exactly the same helps with debugging, tweaking and even deployment.
  • You can run multiple different server environments, on a single computer. Have one client using Apache and another Nginx? No problem, create those two different environments in virtual machines and you're good to go.
  • Unified environment across development teams. If everyone on a development team uses the exact same setup, it speeds up development time and there are less questions about why something is not working on x person's machine.
  • Now that you're sold on a virtualized environment. What should you use?

I'm using VVV. For me it was extremely straight-forward to get up and running, has a good support system around and it is used by many of the big WordPress development agencies, including the one I work for, XWP.

Some of the other options for a virtualized WordPress development environment include: HGV, Wocker, VIP Quickstart.

If you decide to go with VVV, then I definitely recommend the following plugins and tools to take VVV to the next level of awesome.

  • vagrant-hostsupdater – This plugin allows your vagrant installation to update the entries in your computer's hosts file for adding domain mappings to an IP address. This means you don't have to manually add entries to your hosts file.
  • Variable VVV – By far the most useful tool for VVV is called Variable VVV and what it does is gives you the ability to quickly and easily create new VVV WordPress installations using the command line. Definitely check this one out
  • Aleksander Koko has previously written about VVV, and I've also recently recorded a video on how to setup VVV on your own computer.

The Power of the Command Line

Who doesn't like a bit of command line fu, right? WP-CLI is the answer to your inner command line desire.

    WordPress WP-CLI

WP-CLI let's you manage a WordPress installation from the command line (it ships with VVV by the way).

Let's look at some practical examples of how you can use WP-CLI in your local development environment.

  • Install WordPress. SSH'd into your server and need to install WordPress quickly? Simply use WP-CLI to create a new WordPress installation.
  • Update WordPress. There's not much more painful than updating tons of WordPress websites by visiting each one, logging in, clicking around and then updating. You can do this straight from the command line with a single command.
  • Installing plugins. If you've found a great plugin that you want to install across multiple sites, again, do it with one command using WP-CLI.
  • Resetting a WordPress database. Messed something up and want to start off fresh? Easy, one command (this is getting a little repetitive isn't it?)
  • Import content. Yep you guessed it, you can import content into your WordPress install or multiple installs with one command.
  • And so much more
  • That's all quite handy stuff that you can do from the command line. Best yet, in the next section we'll talk about an IDE and you can run all these commands directly from that IDE.

If you're interested in learning more, check out this article on WP-CLI by Ahsan Parwez.

An IDE That Makes a Difference

Out of all the tools I am talking about today, I have a feeling that this is going to be the most contentious. When it comes to IDEs and editors it's almost as if you're invading personal space, and a lot of people don't like that.

I'm not going to try and tell you an IDE is better than a text editor or vice versa. What I'm going to do is tell you my experience of switching to an IDE and how it worked for me.

I have always been someone who has disliked IDEs. Dislike is probably being kind, I hated them. I felt they were bloated, slow and cluttered.

I was a big Sublime Text fan (and still am by the way, I use it daily).

So in December, as I was getting back into WordPress development, I checked out what editors were available to write WordPress code. I was quite surprised when an IDE by the name of PhpStorm kept getting a mention.

Reluctantly, I took a look and boy am I glad that I did!

PhpStorm is the best IDE for PHP and WordPress development, in my opinion. It offers everything you need to build WordPress websites, plugins and themes all in one place and it has incredible WordPress integration (you really need to check it out).

Here are three reasons why you should consider PhpStorm this year for WordPress development:

  • Everything you need, in one place. FTP – check, database support – check, terminal – check, version control – check, debugging – check, refactoring – check, great intellisense and autocomplete – double check! And so much more.
  • WordPress integration within PhpStorm is second to none. PhpStorm understands WordPress deeply. Once it's hooked up to a WordPress project it knows how everything ties together. It autocompletes on WordPress functions and even on actions and filters.
  • Many of the top WordPress developers and agencies are now developing their code with PhpStorm. That to me is a clear sign that it's one of the best IDEs for WordPress development available.
  • If you're interested in getting started with PhpStorm, then check out a series of 7 PhpStorm videos that I recorded to get your started with the IDE.

Making Sure Your Code Is Silky Clean

The last tool that I am going to write about today is a doozy! I'm particularly pedantic when it comes to writing code. I like it to be silky clean and follow the WordPress coding standards to a tee.

But even being that pedantic, we're all humans. And very often I find myself going through the code that I have written and cringing about a missed space or extra new line.

Being in the open source world, it's extremely important that developers stick to coding standards that are defined by the projects otherwise a codebase degrades extremely quickly, especially on a popular open source project like WordPress.

In fact, the WordPress core team is particularly strict about coding standards and that they're followed.

So how can we make sure that our code follows the WordPress coding standards? The answer is simple and it is a tool called PHP CodeSniffer with the WordPress coding standards ruleset.

    WordPress Coding Standards

These two utilities will scan your code, find any discrepancies between your code and how it is expected to be written by the WordPress project and inform you of what is wrong. Magic!

Best of all, they will also notify you of any high level security issues that it encounters. Now it won't catch every single security issue so make sure you're always thinking about security when you're writing your code but it is a good first line of defense.

Of course, I wouldn't be able to complete this section without mentioning that PhpStorm has baked in support for PHP CodeSniffer. I've released a video on how to tie PhpStorm, PHPCS and the WordPress coding standards ruleset together.

    In Closing

There are many alternatives to the tools above and my hope is that at the very least everything I have spoken about today gets you interested in exploring some of the awesome tooling around WordPress development.

The above tools, should you chose to use them, will give you a great foundation for getting started with a more streamlined and automated approached to WordPress development.

If you have other tools that you use, I would love to hear about them in the comments below!

A digital health company envisions itself as the WordPress of patient engagement

BillVanWyckA technology company that wants to change how patient engagement platforms are structured is making its digital health platform widely available to payers, self-employed insurers and specialist physician practices. Bill Van Wyck, the founder of Zillion, also serves as president and Chief Innovation Officer. In a phone interview, he talked about its first collaboration partner, UnitedHealth Group and the platform that powers the payer's weight-loss program, Real Appeal, launched in November last year.

In a phone interview with Van Wyck, he likened its open API-first approach to what WordPress has done for the arduous task of writing code for websites. It has sped up the process of setting up these programs and simplified it, Van Wyck said.

The company claims its software platform  can provide live, video conferencing software, content delivery, and interactive messaging. It can also support scheduling for health literacy content, alerts and reminders, workforce management, data analytics and goal tracking, according to a company statement.

Real Appeal includes a weekly interactive Internet video series, group discussions and live coaching. By Van Wyck's reckoning, it is available to more than 1.5 million users within UnitedHealth Group's network.

"Our video, scheduling, content analytics — it is all configurable."

Among the practices it is targeting include orthopedic and bariatric surgery and prenatal care, with programs changing as care needs evolve from pre-surgery prep to the procedure to recovery.

"You don't have to change the underlying platform if want to change the program," Van Wyck said. "It's useful for big customers. If they wanted to add smoking cessation, weight loss, and diabetes prevention programs, they can still use the same platform to deliver them. It's a turn-key product — it can be implemented fast and at a low-cost."

Van Wyck describes himself as an entrepreneur, not a developer. "My development team are the heroes behind our software. I help figure out ways technology can be used to improve the industry."

Zillion's approach of trying to provide a multitude of approaches to reach a diverse patient population and workforce. But it could also pose a challenge to smaller startups offering fewer program options. Ultimately, it will come down to the effectiveness of the solutions.

    Demystifying the WordPress Hook System

If you've been developing websites with WordPress (including plugin and theme development) chances are you've heard these terms: Hooks, Actions, and Filters. These are part of the Event-driven Architecture Pattern, which WordPress uses.

Are you new to WordPress development or finding it difficult to understand the basic concepts? I can't recommend highly enough Simon Codrington's Introduction to WordPress Plugin Development tutorial. He did a great job of explaining Actions, and Filters.

In this tutorial, I'll be demystifying the WordPress hook system, leaving no stone unturned. Without further ado, let's get started.

Hooks, Actions, Filters. What Are They?

'Hooks' are basically events triggered by WordPress core, themes and plugins at various stages of their execution or interpretation by PHP. When these events are triggered, all the functions and/or class methods hooked or attached to them are executed in their correct order.

Hooks come in two forms, Actions and Filters. While the former is used to add and remove features or functionality at various stages of process execution, the latter modifies the behavior of various features and implementations. Don't worry if you still don't understand. You will when we start seeing some code examples below.

Importance of the Hook System in WordPress

The importance of the hook system in WordPress is simply extensibility. It makes it possible to add and remove features, as well as tweak/modify the implementation of features in WordPress core, plugins and themes.

When you write extensible plugins and themes, you make it possible for other developers to improve and extend them without ever editing the core source code.

    WordPress Hooks

Allow me to cite an example. Unlike most payment gateways, my 2Checkout Payment Gateway for WooCommerce plugin does not include an icon displaying the supported credit card types on the checkout page because I felt it is unnecessary. But you know what; I added a filter in case a user feels otherwise.

It just so happened that we received a support request from a customer requesting for the inclusion of the icon. We were able to provide a code snippet to the customer that hooks into the filter and includes the icon.

Delving into the WordPress Hook System

At various stages of WordPress execution, a large number of events are triggered commonly using the do_actions() and apply_filters() PHP functions. These events can be subscribed or hooked to via add_action() and add_filter().

Please note the use of the word 'commonly'. There are other ways events can be triggered. We'll explore that in the second part of this tutorial.

Below is an example of an action in a plugin. This action is fired after a successful user registration in my ProfilePress user registration plugin.

    /** * Fires after a user registration is completed. * * @param int $form_id ID of the registration form. * @param mixed $user_data array of registered user info. * @param int $user_id ID of the registered user. */ do_action( 'pp_after_registration', $form_id, $user_data, $user_id );

During WordPress execution, all the functions hooked into this action will be processed.

An example of a filter hook is the_content in WordPress core which filters every posts contents.

    /** * Filter the post content. * * @since 0.71 * * @param string $content Content of the current post. */ $content = apply_filters( 'the_content', $content ); Take Note

In do_action(), the first argument is the name of the action hook and subsequent arguments are variables available to functions that hook into the action.

And in apply_filters(), the first argument is the name of the filter hook, the second is the data or value on which the functions hooked to the filter are modified or applied. Subsequent arguments are variables/values available to functions that hook into the filter.

Don't worry, all this will make more sense as we examine code examples.

    Action Hook Examples Example #1

Taking my ProfilePress plugin's pp_after_registration action for a spin; let's say we want to implement a feature where users will receive an SMS (via an assumed messaging service called Dolio) welcoming them to your website immediately after registration. Our function hook could be in this form:

    add_action( 'pp_after_registration', 'send_users_welcome_sms', 20, 3 ); function send_users_welcome_sms( $form_id, $user_data, $user_id ) { global $service_locator; $username = $user_data['username']; $firstName = $user_data['first_name']; $lastName = $user_data['last_name']; $phoneNumber = $user_data['phone_number']; $text = <<<SMS_CONTENT Hello $firstName $lastName, Welcome to SitePoint. "\r\n" User ID: $user_id "\r\n" Username: $username "\r\n" Password: The password you sign up with "\r\n" SMS_CONTENT; $dolio = $service_locator->get( 'dolio_sdk' ); $dolio->phone_number( $phoneNumber ); $dolio->sms_content( $text ); $dolio->send(); }

The third argument of add_action in the code above is the hook priority which specifies the order in which the function hooked to pp_after_registration action will be executed. Leaving this empty will default to 10. While the fourth argument specifies the number of arguments the function hook will accept. Default to 1 if empty.

Assuming I left out the fourth argument, thus defaulting to 1, the $user_data and $user_id variable will be null because we only told the function to accept just one argument.

    Example #2

WordPress includes the following action hooks — wp_head and wp_footer — that are both triggered in the head tag and before the closing body tag on the front end respectively.

These hooks can be used to display script and data at those strategic locations.

Let's check out some code examples.

The code below uses wp_head to include Google's site verification meta tag to the header of the WordPress front end.

    add_action( 'wp_head', 'google_site_verification' ); function google_site_verification() { echo '<meta name="google-site-verification" content="ytl89rlFsAzH7dWLs_U2mdlivbrr_jgV4Gq7wClHDUJ8" />'; }

All hook functions will be anonymous in lieu of the named function to avoid unnecessary repetition of function's names. For example, the code for Google site verification Meta tag above will now become:

    add_action( 'wp_head', function () { echo '<meta name="google-site-verification" content="ytl89rlFsAzH7dWLs_U2mdlivbrr_jgV4Gq7wClHDUJ8" />'; });

The code below uses wp_footer to add JavaScript in the footer area of WordPress front end.

    add_action( 'wp_footer', function () { echo '<script type="text/javascript" src="http://example.com/wp-content/plugins/site-specific-plugin/hello-bar.js"></script>'; });

Enough of the action hooks code example, let's check out filters.

    Filter Hook Examples Example #1

Say we are developing an ad inserter plugin that will programmatically insert ads before and after every post content, the the_content filter is what we need.

The code below includes the text 'We love SitePoint' before and after every post content.

    add_filter( 'the_content', function ( $content ) { $text = sprintf( '<div class="notice alert">%s</div>', __( 'We love SitePoint', 'sp' ) ); $content = $text . $content . $text; return $content; });

Code explanation: the content of $text variable is the same as <div class="notice alert">We love SitePoint</div> albeit internationalized so that it can be localized. Confused? Please take a look at my tutorials on WordPress i18n and l10n.

Mind you, the function parameter $content, is the variable that supplies the post content.

We then append the custom text before and after the post content, save the resultant data to $content and subsequently return it.

Note: all filter hook functions must return the variable parameter after manipulation or modification.

    Example #2

Another filter example we'll look at is the_title. Below is how it is defined in line 158 of wp-includes/post-template.php.

    /** * Filter the post title. * * @since 0.71 * * @param string $title The post title. * @param int $id The post ID. */ return apply_filters( 'the_title', $title, $id );

The code below modifies only the title of a post with ID 5978 by appending - WeLoveSitePoint to it. This is possible thanks to the $id argument.

    add_filter( 'the_title', function ( $title, $id ) { if ( $id == '5978' ) { $title .= ' - WeLoveSitePoint'; } return $title; }, 10, 2 ); Conclusion

The reason WordPress continues to be the leading content management system is because of its extensibility.

The WordPress Hook system has made it possible for WordPress to be transformed into powerful web applications, whether that be an ecommerce store with WooCommerce, a forum with bbPress or even a social networking site with BuddyPress.

In Part 2 of this tutorial, I will sharing some cool and little known facts about the hook system in WordPress such as how to: use them in a class, hook static and non-static methods to actions and filters, use namespaces, its caveats and solutions and a whole lot more. So stay tuned and happy coding.
