Anonymous hacking group exposes US and UK tech firms 'hosting ISIS websites'

Anonymous hacking group exposes tech firms hosting ISIS websitesGETTY

EXPOSED: Tech firms, including CloudFlare and Wordpress, are accused of hosting pro-ISIS sites

CloudFlare, Wordpress and UK2 Hosting are among the companies listed by the crack team of hacktivists known as BinarySec.

They claim the firms listed either refused to remove websites allegedly affiliated with ISIS or "turned a blind eye" when asked to take them down.

However, there is no implication the websites have any links to Islamic State or support their views.

A statement on their website reads: "When ISIS websites are identified to and by BinarySec we exhaust every every possible avenue to have the materials removed as quickly as possible.

BinarySec, comprised of several prominent members of the masked group, have been waging an on-going cyber campaign against Islamic State extremists called #OpISIS.

Its aim is to disrupt ISIS' online operations in order to "cure the ISIS virus".

Earlier this year, GhostSec, a member of the hacking collective, released another list of tech firms accused of hosting websites allegedly linked to ISIS.

Speaking to IBTTimes, an Anonymous member involved with the group said: "These websites were collected by monitoring Islamic State accounts on Twitter and logging them over a period of three months.

"We believe it is critical for the world to see who is hosting this type of content and we believe they should be held accountable. These web assets pose a great risk as they are a source of recruitment for Islamic State and a communications platform used to conduct atrocities against humankind."

Anonymous and its splinter groups has reportedly targeted hundreds of ISIS linked websites.

They claimed 85 were "destroyed" as part of #OpISIS during an assault on 233 domains.

When the Daily Star Online approached CloudFlare for comment, a representative stressed the difference between hosting content and operation as a proxy.

She said: "I'd like to clarify is that CloudFlare isn't a host. Our IP addresses may appear in a whois query since we are a reverse proxy, but we are not hosting sites.

"As a result, terminating a customer would not cause any content to go away, it would simply make it slower and more vulnerable to attack."

Daily Star Online has requested comment from Wordpress and UK2.

There is no suggestion these firms condone Islamic State activity.
