Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, secured the rights to.blog domains, which people can purchase at WordPress.com or through their partner domain name registrars.
The awkward but frank domain name.blog will soon be available to purchase for bloggers everywhere.
"For years, .com was the dominant choice for website names, but it's become increasingly hard to find a name".
Automattic is also still finalizing the pricing for its.blog domains, but notes that the cost will be reasonable compared to most other domain names-unless, it seems, the name you want is particularly memorable. "Plus, you'll get all the same benefits with Google search results", Automattic wrote in a post. Popular website hosting service WordPress.com intends to change that, announcing Thursday that.blog domain extensions will be available for Internet users later this year.
Pricing is still being finalised, but Automattic did mention that it will be in the standard range for new top-level domains, while there will be some premium pricing for higher-value names.
The sunrise period for the new domain will launch in August 2016, allowing trademark owners to register.blog domains associated with their brands.
