    How to Create a Custom WordPress Widgets

    To be honest, it's not your job to create widgets unless you have the technical knowledge related to WordPress development and related programming language to code. I'll try my best to deliver a simple and quick guide on creating custom WordPress widgets, but unless you have related knowledge, I can't guarantee that you'll succeed.

    WordPress has been known for the simplicity, and I can assure you that the process of creating widgets is pretty straight and simple. But, still, you need to have those basics covered and must be aware of every technical aspect included within.

    You can, of course, ask questions and clear your doubts, by sharing your side in the discussion section, and I'll definitely attend each of your issues. So, shall we move ahead in the process now? Let's hit it!

    What's Widget?

    Widgets are either available pre-included in the theme your website is using, or they need to be installed using their respective plugins. There is no way you can add a widget without a theme or plugin because that's what works in WordPress.

    The reason behind that limitation is that WordPress allows inserting of function codes (the one which defines how a website looks, performs or function), only in the Theme or Plugin. Themes are having the code describing the behavior of a website, while Plugins have the code which always describes the functionality of a website or certain elements.

    It totally depends on the theme developer, whether or not, he/she includes widgets in the theme package. If he does, then you'll find them listed on available section under the Widgets tab within Appearance. But if it isn't the case, then you need to take help of plugins. Look for the ones who are offering those widgets you're exactly looking for, and finally installing the same.

    Once that plugin is installed, it will rather not do anything else, but will do everything it is possible and can, through its widget. So, this is how it works.

    Also, WordPress allows adding widgets mostly in the sidebar, or in the footer, or sometimes at the end of a post or during the start of it. The section where these will be allowed, totally depends on how your theme is coded. If you've installed a theme which not allows any single widget at all, because of offering a single page layout, then you're definitely at the wrong door.

    Now, since you're aware of all those initial things, you are ready to move ahead. To create a widget, we need to create a Plugin, right? So, let's start with creating our first custom plugin.

    Important – I recommend taking a full backup of the whole WordPress files installed and available on the server.

    The very first thing you need to do is to create a new folder inside the Plugin folder (wp-content/plugins). You can name it whatever you want. But, try and think of a unique name. Otherwise, it will collide with the name of an existing plugin, and then WordPress won't allow its presence.

    Once the folder appears, create a text file, and name it 'MyWidget.php'. This is the creation of your first widget's code file, and so, you've to add the following code into the same.

    <?php

    /*

    Plugin Name: My Plugin 'or you can name anything'

    Version: 1.0 'since this is the first version'

    Plugin URI: 'Your URL Here'

    Description: 'Description of Your Plugin Here.'

    Author: 'Your Name Here'

    Author URI: 'Your URL Here'

    */

    The text above in single quotes can be changed according to you, and the one I've written are just an example. So, don't simply copy paste the same.

    Now, add the following code beneath the previous one, and this time, we will be adding a special set of functionality to the plugin.

    public function form( $instance ) {

        $title = ";

        if( !empty( $instance['title'] ) ) {

            $title = $instance['title'];

        }

        $text = ";

        if( !empty( $instance['text'] ) ) {

            $text = $instance['text'];

        }

       ?>

       <p>

            <label for="<?php echo $this->get_field_name( 'title' ); ?>"><?php _e( 'Title:' ); ?></label>

            <input class="widefat" id="<?php echo $this->get_field_id( 'title' ); ?>" name="<?php echo $this->get_field_name( 'title' ); ?>" type="text" value="<?php echo esc_attr( $title ); ?>" />

        </p>

       <p>

            <label for="<?php echo $this->get_field_name( 'text' ); ?>"><?php _e( 'Text:' ); ?></label>

            <textarea class="widefat" id="<?php echo $this->get_field_id( 'text' ); ?>" name="<?php echo $this->get_field_name( 'text' ); ?>" type="text" ><?php echo esc_attr( $text ); ?></textarea>

        </p>

       <div class='mfc-text'>

       </div>

       <?php

       echo $args['after_widget'];

    }

    Each function we used above has its purpose, and you need to set it according to the way you wish to use the plugin. You can create different variables; that will help the widget to have different sections. If you want, you can also add a description (in the programming language, its called Comment) for every line of code, so someone other than you, can understand the reason for its existence.

    Now, save the file, and refresh the File Manager. Login to the WordPress Dashboard and move into Plugins section. Over there, you'll find the listing of your newly created custom Plugin. Hit the Activate button to start its journey.

    Over to you

    The procedure is over, and I guess everything went without any issues, at all. The example I shared above in the coding, will do a very little thing. But, if you're looking to insert an entirely custom functionality, then you definitely need to write related code to the same.

    This clearly means that you should be aware of everything related to the plugin creation, and most importantly, the PHP programming language being used here. In short, you need to be a WordPress developer, in order to break the leg.

    WordPress 4.8 Release Targeted for June 8

    WordPress 4.8 kicked off in this week's core developer meeting and the schedule for the upcoming release is now published. Beta 1 is scheduled for May 12 and the official release is targeted for June 8. This will be the first major release in 2017 and is focused on laying the foundation for the new Gutenberg editor. The schedule identifies the features that contributors are aiming to ship in 4.8:

  • TinyMCE inline element / link boundaries
  • New media widgets
  • WYSIWYG in text widget
  • WordCamp / meetup dashboard upgrade to the "news" section
  • Several contributors expressed concern during the meeting about the compressed timeline, as both the beta and RC testing times have roughly half the time they have been given in the past. Also, the release's close proximity to WordCamp Europe, which officially begins activities the following week, presented additional concerns about the added workload of a release within the May/June timeframe.

    "I think people are thinking of this as a normal release, a train leaving the station that a bunch of stuff (multisite! meta!) has to get on to make it in," 4.8 release lead Matt Mullenweg said. "I agree that needs a much longer timeframe.

    "What is really going on is that we have a few simple, already working as plugin enhancements that add a few files, and we want to get those in the hands of users sooner rather than later. We already update TinyMCE all the time. Potential breakage or compatibility should be limited to things that interact with the text widget or the news dashboard module."

    After a brief discussion on the dev meeting notes, the proposed schedule was confirmed. The feature project merge deadline is coming up on May 10, followed by Beta 1 two days later. Any enhancements that are not ready to proceed on this timeline will be put on hold for a future release.

    Unpatched Wordpress Flaw Could Allow Hackers To Reset Admin Password

    WordPress, the most popular CMS in the world, is vulnerable to a logical vulnerability that could allow a remote attacker to reset targeted users' password under certain circumstances.

    The vulnerability (CVE-2017-8295) becomes even more dangerous after knowing that it affects all versions of WordPress — including the latest 4.7.4 version.

    The WordPress flaw was discovered by Polish security researcher Dawid Golunski of Legal Hackers last year in July and reported it to the WordPress security team, who decided to ignore this issue, leaving millions of websites vulnerable.

    "This issue has been reported to WordPress security team multiple times with the first report sent back in July 2016. It was reported both directly via security contact email, as well as via HackerOne website," Golunski wrote in an advisory published today. "As there has been no progress, in this case, this advisory is finally released to the public without an official patch." Golunski is the same researcher who discovered a critical vulnerability in the popular open source PHPMailer libraries that allowed malicious actors to remotely execute arbitrary code in the context of the web server and compromise the target web application.The vulnerability lies in the way WordPress processes the password reset request, for the user it has been initiated.

    In general, when a user requests to reset his/her password through forgot password option, WordPress immediately generates a unique secret code and sends it to user's email ID already stored in the database.

    What's the Vulnerability? While sending this email, WordPress uses a variable called SERVER_NAME to obtain the hostname of a server to set values of the From/Return-Path fields.Here, "From" refers to the email address of the sender and "Return-Path" refers to the email address where 'bounce-back' emails should be delivered in the case of failure in the delivery for some reason.

    According to Golunski, an attacker can send a spoofed HTTP request with a predefined custom hostname value (for example attacker-mxserver.com), while initiating password reset process for a targeted admin user.Since the hostname in the malicious HTTP request is an attacker-controlled domain, the From and Return-Path fields in the password reset email will be modified to include an email ID associated with the attacker's domain, i.e. wordpress@attacker-mxserver.com, instead of wordpress@victim-domain.com.

    "Because of the modified HOST header, the SERVER_NAME will be set to the hostname of attacker's choice. As a result, Wordpress will pass the following headers and email body to the /usr/bin/sendmail wrapper," Golunski says. Don't get confused here: You should note that the password reset email will be delivered to victim's email address only, but since the From and Return-Path fields now point to attacker's email ID, the attacker can also receive reset code under following scenarios:
  • If, in case, the victim replies to that email, it will be delivered to attacker email ID (mentioned in 'From' field), containing a password reset link in the message history.
  • If, for some reason, victim's email server is down, the password reset email will automatically bounce-back to the email address mentioned in "Return-Path" field, which points to the attacker's inbox.
  • In another possible scenario, to forcefully retrieve bounce-back email, the attacker can perform a DDoS attack against the victim's email server or send a large number of emails, so that the victim's email account can no longer receive any email.
  • "The CVE-2017-8295 attack could potentially be carried out both with user interaction (the user hitting the 'reply' button scenario), or without user interaction (spam victim's mailbox to exceed their storage quota)," Golunski told The Hacker News in an email. For obvious reason, this is not a sure shot method, but in the case of targeted attacks, sophisticated hackers can manage to exploit this flaw successfully.

    Another notable fact on which successful exploitation of this flaw depends is that, even if WordPress website is flawed, not all web servers allow an attacker to modify hostname via SERVER_NAME header, including WordPress hosted on any shared servers.

    "SERVER_NAME server header can be manipulated on default configurations of Apache Web server (most common WordPress deployment) via HOST header of an HTTP request," Golunski says. Since the vulnerability has now been publically disclosed with no patch available from the popular CMS company, WordPress admins are advised to update their server configuration to enable UseCanonicalName to enforce static/predefined SERVER_NAME value.
